Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost airline, has unveiled a major expansion plan for its operations from Rome Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) to Spain for the Summer 2026 season. This strategic move will see the introduction of 12 new routes, significantly increasing the airline’s overall capacity from Rome by 21%, offering over 2.2 million seats to passengers.
Increased Frequency on Popular Routes
Travelers can expect an increase in the number of flights to popular Spanish destinations such as Madrid and Barcelona. Furthermore, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, and Malaga will benefit from daily or double-daily connections, while Ibiza will see 12 flights per week. These additions aim to cater to the growing demand for travel between Italy and Spain.
New Destinations Added to the Network
Beyond the increased frequencies, Wizz Air is also adding two entirely new destinations to its network from Fiumicino: Menorca and Zaragoza. These new routes will complement existing connections to Seville, Alicante, Bilbao, and Tenerife, providing passengers with even more options for exploring Spain.

Silvia Mosquera, Chief Commercial Officer at Wizz Air, highlighted the strong cultural ties between Rome and Spain. “There is a natural affinity between Roman culture and Spanish hospitality, a shared way of understanding life and conviviality that we want to continue to foster,” Mosquera explained. This sentiment is supported by robust tourism figures, with Spain welcoming 5.7 million Italian tourists in 2025, an increase of 3.3%, and a corresponding rise in spending to 5 billion euros (+6.7%).
Rome Fiumicino: A Strategic Hub for Wizz Air
Rome Fiumicino remains a critically important strategic base for Wizz Air. The airline aims to continue its growth at the Roman airport, building on its impressive track record of 28 million passengers transported from Fiumicino since 2005, including a record 6.8 million travelers in the last year alone. Currently, Wizz Air bases 16 aircraft permanently in Rome.

Gonzalo Ceballos, Tourism Counselor at the Spanish Embassy in Italy, emphasized the significance of air travel between the two nations. “Regarding international air traffic, Italy-Spain connections rank first with over 22.5 million passengers between the two countries,” Ceballos stated. He further noted that Wizz Air plays a fundamental role in transforming the tourism sector and promoting lesser-known destinations, aligning with Spain’s “Turismo Espana 2030” strategy to foster sustainable tourism growth.
