Trastevere: Carabinieri Crack Down on “Mala Movida” with Five Arrests and Drug Seizures
Rome, May 24, 2026 – Carabinieri have intensified their efforts to combat drug dealing, violence, and illegal activities associated with nightlife in the Trastevere district. A weekend operation, led by the Rome Trastevere company, focused on areas popular with young people and tourists, particularly those prone to urban decay. The initiative is part of a broader security plan aimed at ensuring peace for residents and promoting safer Roman evenings, in collaboration with a new joint project between the municipality and the prefecture.
During the checks, approximately 250 individuals were identified, and around thirty vehicles were inspected. The operation resulted in five arrests, two formal complaints, and several seizures of narcotic substances.
Ponte Sisto Under Special Surveillance
Ponte Sisto, a central hub of Rome’s nightlife, was a primary focus of the operation. Here, officers apprehended a young man in the act of selling hashish to a customer. In the same vicinity, two more individuals were arrested for dealing drugs amidst the crowd. One of the detainees reportedly resisted the Carabinieri, further complicating his legal situation.
Furthermore, officers observed two men acting suspiciously in the neighborhood’s streets. A subsequent search uncovered approximately one hundred grams of hashish and cash believed to be linked to drug dealing. Both individuals were arrested.
Arrest of a Man with an Existing Warrant
During the extraordinary service, Carabinieri also located a 53-year-old Roman man who was the subject of a detention order issued by judicial authorities. He was escorted to his home, where he will serve his sentence under house arrest.
The operation extended beyond drug enforcement to include general territorial control, aiming to prevent violence and hazardous situations in the city’s most crowded areas.
Complaints and Reports for Drugs and Weapons
Among the individuals stopped, a young man was reported for possession of a folding knife approximately twenty centimeters long. He was found consuming drugs at the time of his apprehension. Additionally, four other individuals were reported to the Prefecture for possessing small quantities of drugs intended for personal use.
This operation underscores the law enforcement’s commitment to addressing the phenomenon of “mala movida,” particularly in the capital’s busiest weekend areas. The objective remains to combat drug dealing, violence, and dangerous behaviors, thereby protecting residents, businesses, and visitors.
As per legal provisions, all individuals involved in these investigations are considered innocent until a final judgment is rendered.
