Naples: Spiaggia delle Monache Unexpectedly Closed, Citizens Face Bureaucratic Wall

Naples, May 23, 2026 – Saturday brought an unpleasant surprise and considerable frustration for many citizens in Naples who, drawn by the summer heat, headed to the Spiaggia delle Monache in Posillipo. Without any prior warning, the beach was closed, leaving hundreds of bathers facing a locked gate and no clear explanations.

The root cause of the closure is a bureaucratic delay concerning the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, which has not yet completed the tender for the assignment of a section of the beach. Consequently, the technical offices of the Municipality of Naples ordered the closure of both the beach area and the access path through the bar, which serves as the sole entry point to the area.

Political Intervention and Public Outcry

Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a deputy from the Green Left Alliance, swiftly intervened. He posted signs stating “closed due to bureaucratic incompetence” and “closed due to excessive bureaucracy” to inform bewildered citizens and denounce the absurd situation. Borrelli emphasized that “the sea is being denied to Neapolitans due to the administrative inefficiency of the Port Authority, whose president is a political expression of Salvini’s League.” He also issued an urgent appeal for a quick resolution to the bureaucratic issue keeping the beach closed, highlighting the risks to safety and the right of thousands of citizens to access the sea.

Overcrowding and Safety Concerns

The immediate consequence of the closure was a significant overcrowding of nearby beaches, particularly Bagno Elena and Bagno Ideal. These locations experienced an influx of approximately 6,000 people beyond their maximum capacity. This situation has created serious safety concerns, including a lack of adequate surveillance and impassable escape routes, exposing bathers to concrete risks in the event of emergencies or sudden tensions. Borrelli promptly reported the emergency to the Coast Guard, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The Need for Streamlined Administrative Procedures

This incident underscores the urgent need to streamline administrative procedures and ensure the safety of public spaces, especially during the summer months when access to the sea is a vital necessity for Neapolitans. The closure has sparked a debate about administrative efficiency and the impact of bureaucratic hurdles on public welfare and leisure.

Citizens and local politicians are now calling for immediate action to reopen Spiaggia delle Monache and prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. The focus remains on finding a swift resolution that prioritizes public access and safety, ensuring that Naples’ beautiful coastline remains accessible to all.

The situation highlights a broader issue of administrative bottlenecks affecting public services and amenities, prompting calls for greater accountability and more efficient governance to serve the needs of the community.
