San Giovanni a Teduccio Beach Reclaimed: Naples Aims for Full Swimmability by 2027
Naples, May 24, 2026 – The San Giovanni a Teduccio beach, also known as the Municipality beach, has completed its remediation and requalification process. This significant achievement marks a crucial step in the administration’s goal to achieve full swimmability for the area by 2027. The extensive cleanup operations, certified by Arpac, have radically transformed the eastern part of Naples, making the shoreline perfectly leveled and ready for public use.
The project, strongly supported by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi’s administration, has been a strategic focus since the beginning of the legislative term.
Commitment to the Remediation of San Giovanni Beach
The recovery project has deep roots, with the process initiating in 2022. Paolo Mancuso, the former Councillor for the Sea, unblocked previously frozen funds, which were crucial for starting the environmental remediation. Current Councillor Edoardo Cosenza expressed great enthusiasm regarding the completion of the works, calling it a “historic” achievement.
Accessibility of the San Giovanni Grande Beach
Currently, the area is fully accessible for sunbathing and relaxation. Residents can already frequent the San Giovanni Grande beach, where several commercial activities are present. A refreshment point, serving as both a bar and restaurant, is already operational. The Municipality plans to further enhance these services in the coming months and aims to install new sports facilities to promote beach sports.
Towards Swimmability of San Giovanni Beach
Achieving full swimmability for San Giovanni beach requires a joint effort between the Municipality, Abc, and the Region. While the sea is not yet swimmable at this specific point of the coastline, there is a functional connection to the nearby Pietrarsa beach via Via Boccaperti, where water conditions already permit safe bathing. Councillor Cosenza emphasized the need for swift, concerted action from all parties to achieve complete swimmability.
Interventions on Drainage Canals in Eastern Naples
The improvement in water quality is a direct result of targeted structural interventions on the drainage canals. Technicians have worked intensively on the Volla and Levante discharge systems, which were historical sources of pollution. The full activation of the pumping systems has drastically reduced environmental criticalities, minimizing pollution. This strategy lays the necessary groundwork for an optimistic future.
Former Purifier Towards Urban Regeneration
The main challenge remains the recovery of the former San Giovanni purifier, an aging structure. Works are scheduled to begin next month and are expected to last 540 days, with a total investment of 111 million euros. This will not only be a technological revamping but also a large-scale urban regeneration operation. The area will be transformed into a seaside piazza directly connected to the Pietrarsa Museum.
A Unified Complex for Collective Life
The redesign of the spaces aims to create a unified complex open to citizens. The project, clearly outlined in the Municipal Preliminary Design Document, seeks to re-integrate the neighborhood with other coastal municipalities located to the east. The technical report emphasizes that the redesign of volumes and spaces will result in the formation of a unified complex. This area is set to become Naples’ third major promenade, alongside Bagnoli and Via Caracciolo.
Metropolitan Area and Wastewater Enhancement
The remediation of the purifier is strategic for the entire metropolitan area. The wastewater treatment system will be enhanced through advanced biological processes, with a treatment capacity serving approximately 860,000 inhabitants across 14 different municipalities. 2027 is the target year for the full enjoyment of the reclaimed sea. This complex but necessary process is vital for revitalizing the eastern coast.
Prospects for Naples’ Eastern Coast
The Municipality of Naples is making significant interventions in the eastern district, including the Taverna del Ferro area. The effectiveness of the pumping works towards the Eastern Naples purifier has already been demonstrated. Now, attention shifts to the collection system in the area bordering the city’s Port. Councillor Edoardo Cosenza reiterated the focus on the collection system near the Port, ensuring tangible benefits for the entire urban coastline.
