Milan Transforms Piazza Mondadori into a Green ‘Sponge City’ Hub

Milan, Lombardy, Italy – Piazza Mondadori, a significant crossroads in the Porta Lodovica district of Milan, is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment to create a new green pedestrian area. The project, which commenced recently, is slated for completion by autumn 2026 and aims to transform 600 square meters of asphalt into a permeable green space designed to combat the effects of climate change.

The initiative focuses on expanding sidewalks and enhancing pedestrian safety at key crossings. The newly envisioned piazza will feature benches, bicycle racks, elements to deter illegal parking, and a variety of trees and shrubs, promising a more welcoming and environmentally friendly urban space. The design and execution of the project are overseen by MM.

A Step Towards a ‘Sponge City’

Elena Grandi, the Councilor for the Environment, highlighted the project’s alignment with Milan’s broader ‘sponge city’ strategy. “Our work towards becoming a ‘sponge city’ continues and even accelerates, creating a city increasingly capable of addressing the effects and impacts of climate change,” Grandi stated. She emphasized the importance of converting asphalted squares and streets, which currently act as heat islands, into inviting spaces that offer respite, absorb heavy rainfall, and mitigate heat, particularly during the summer months. Grandi also referenced similar depaving projects in other areas of Milan, including Via Toce, Bruzzano Cemetery, and Via Pacini.

Fulfilling a Long-Held Vision for Municipality 1

Mattia Abdu, President of Municipality 1, expressed his satisfaction with the project, noting its dual benefits. “This depaving and redevelopment intervention, in addition to having a very important environmental value, represents the fulfillment of an idea that we have been discussing for a long time in Municipality 1, and which has finally taken shape in recent years with this project, in acceptance of our proposals,” Abdu added. This sentiment underscores the collaborative effort and long-term planning behind the transformation of Piazza Mondadori.

Project Details and Environmental Impact

The transformation of Piazza Mondadori is a strategic move to enhance urban resilience against climate change. By replacing impermeable asphalt with green, permeable surfaces, the piazza will be better equipped to manage stormwater runoff, reducing the risk of localized flooding during intense rainfall events. The introduction of new trees and shrubs will also contribute to urban cooling, providing shade and reducing the urban heat island effect, which is particularly crucial in densely populated areas like Milan.

Furthermore, the increased green space is expected to improve air quality, foster biodiversity, and create a more aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors. The inclusion of new urban furniture like benches and bicycle racks will encourage social interaction and sustainable transportation, making the piazza a more functional and enjoyable public space.

Future of Milan’s Urban Landscape

The Piazza Mondadori project is part of a larger trend in Milan to green its urban fabric and adapt to environmental challenges. These initiatives are crucial for improving the quality of life for citizens, promoting public health, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the city. As Milan continues to evolve, such projects will play a vital role in shaping its future as a leading example of urban environmental innovation.

The city’s commitment to creating more green spaces and implementing ‘sponge city’ principles reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban planning, aiming to balance development with ecological responsibility. The successful completion of Piazza Mondadori’s redevelopment will serve as a model for future urban renewal projects across Milan and beyond.
