Naples, Campania, Italy, June 15 – A new Frecciarossa high-speed train service will link Lecce, Bari, and Naples from July 1st, Trenitalia CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio announced yesterday during a panel at the Forum in Masseria. This new connection is expected to significantly reduce travel times and enhance regional mobility.
New Connection to Boost Regional Travel and Tourism
Strisciuglio highlighted the symbolic and territorial value of the new route, stating, “From July 1st, we will activate this new connection that has symbolic and territorial value. We will connect Lecce to Naples, passing through Bari and Naples Afragola. Bari will therefore be reachable from the Campanian capital in 3 and a half hours. Gradually, we will reach two hours between the capitals of Puglia and Campania.” This initiative aims to further stimulate tourism and business travel between these key southern Italian cities.
The announcement emphasizes Trenitalia’s commitment to expanding its high-speed network and improving connectivity across Italy. The new service is a direct response to growing demand for rail travel, which has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
Increased Demand and Infrastructure Investments
Strisciuglio also noted the high demand for train travel, which is “much higher than pre-Covid.” He elaborated on Trenitalia’s strategy to meet this demand through investments and industrial system improvements, aiming to ensure mobility even amidst ongoing construction work.
“Through investments and the industrial system, we want to guarantee mobility even in the presence of construction sites with alternative solutions, shortening interruption times,” Strisciuglio explained. He acknowledged the current construction sites across Italy but stressed their importance for the nation’s future infrastructure. “Currently, there are construction sites in Italy, it’s true, but they represent the means to improve the nation’s future. Moreover, the railway system is currently performing well, and this model has also become an example for other European countries that, unlike us, completely block circulation when working on infrastructure.”
This forward-looking approach underscores Trenitalia’s dedication to modernizing its network and providing efficient services, even as it undertakes significant infrastructure upgrades.
International Expansion and Competition
Looking beyond national borders, Strisciuglio touched upon international competition and Trenitalia’s plans for expansion. He asserted that international competition will further enhance and improve service quality. “Competition is therefore not a concept exclusively related to price, but to quality. We in Italy have already experienced this, and it has also made Trenitalia work better.”
Trenitalia’s international ambitions are strong, with plans to extend the Frecciarossa service to Munich next year. “Our foreign ambitions are strong, and next year, collaborating with the railway carriers of Austria and Germany, we will bring the Frecciarossa to Munich, connecting it initially with Milan and Rome.” This move signifies Trenitalia’s growing presence in the European rail market, leveraging its expertise and high-quality services to compete on an international scale.
The introduction of the new Frecciarossa service between Lecce, Bari, and Naples is a significant development for regional connectivity in Southern Italy, promising faster travel times and contributing to the economic and tourism growth of the affected regions. Trenitalia’s continued investment in infrastructure and its strategic international expansion underscore its role as a key player in both the domestic and European railway sectors.
