Naples Prefect Honors Salvatore Nuvoletta, ‘Hero of Our Time’

Naples, June 4, 2026 – The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, paid tribute to Salvatore Nuvoletta, a young Carabinieri officer who was tragically killed in Marano in July 1982. Speaking at the inaugural edition of the ‘Dalla parte giusta – carabiniere Salvatore Nuvoletta’ award ceremony held at the S. Maria degli Angeli convent in Marano di Napoli, Prefect di Bari lauded Nuvoletta as a ‘hero of our time.’

Prefect di Bari highlighted Nuvoletta’s profound decision to ‘choose,’ even in the face of death, emphasizing that he ‘understood that even in the face of death he had no other choice’ and became ‘blood that irrigated these territories with principles of legality and justice.’

“Each of us, present here, is called to bear living witness not of a deceased but of a living person,” the Prefect stated. He continued, “We are called to live this moment, perhaps to provide further justice, perhaps to cherish the memory of this young man. This too. But the abstraction of all this becomes a paradigm of the example in which each of us intends to see ourselves.”

Remembering a Sacrifice for Legality

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Nuvoletta’s sacrifice and his enduring legacy in the fight for justice and legality. His story continues to inspire, particularly in a region often challenged by organized crime.

In addition to Salvatore Nuvoletta’s family, the event was attended by members of the extraordinary commission of the Municipality of Marano, the provincial commander of the Carabinieri, General Biagio Storniolo, and the Police Commissioner of Naples, Maurizio Agricola. Their presence underscored the institutional commitment to upholding the values Nuvoletta represented.

An Enduring Legacy

The award ceremony, ‘Dalla parte giusta – carabiniere Salvatore Nuvoletta,’ aims to keep alive the memory of the young officer and to promote the principles of legality and justice he embodied. It also seeks to recognize those who continue to work towards these ideals in their communities.

The Prefect’s words resonated with the attendees, emphasizing the importance of remembering such figures whose actions serve as a beacon for future generations. Nuvoletta’s story is a testament to courage and unwavering dedication to duty, even at the ultimate cost.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from local authorities and community leaders to foster a culture of legality and to ensure that the sacrifice of individuals like Salvatore Nuvoletta is never forgotten.
