Milan Introduces Stricter Nightlife Rules in 12 Key Zones

Milan, June 10 – Starting Thursday, June 11, new ordinances will come into effect to regulate nightlife in 12 critical zones across Milan. These measures, aimed at curbing disturbances and ensuring public order, will remain active until November 2, 2026. The regulations primarily target the sale of alcoholic beverages, takeaway services, and the use of outdoor seating areas (dehors).

Affected Areas and Key Restrictions

The initial set of regulations will apply to the following areas: Nolo, Isola, Sarpi, Cesariano, Arco della Pace, Como/Gae Aulenti, Brera, Ticinese, Darsena and Navigli, Cinque Vie, and Bicocca. An exception applies to the Garibaldi area between Via Moscova and Via Marsala and Largo La Foppa, where a 2021 ordinance remains in effect.

The new provisions, active from early June to early November, include:

  • Alcohol Sales Ban: Retail outlets and automatic dispensers are prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages from 10:00 PM onwards.
  • Takeaway Alcohol Ban: All types of public establishments and artisan takeaway businesses are forbidden from selling or serving alcoholic beverages for takeaway from midnight.
  • Outdoor Seating Restrictions: The use of outdoor seating areas for any activity is prohibited from 1:00 AM on weekdays and from 2:00 AM on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays for all public establishments with such concessions.
  • Street Vending Ban: Itinerant street vending in nightlife areas is banned from 8:00 PM.

Specific Measures for Lazzaretto-Melzo Area

In addition to these general regulations, the municipality has initiated a second, specific ordinance for the Lazzaretto-Melzo area. This action follows a November 2023 ruling by the Milan Court, which condemned the Municipality for failing to stop excessive noise levels in the area.

This particular ordinance imposes even stricter rules, including:

  • Complete Ban on Takeaway Food and Drinks: The sale and administration of all types of food and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) for takeaway are prohibited from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following day. This applies to all public establishments, neighborhood stores, artisan takeaway businesses, and automatic dispensers.
  • Outdoor Seating Ban: The use of outdoor seating areas for any activity is forbidden from midnight to 6:00 AM.

These comprehensive measures underscore the city’s commitment to balancing the vibrancy of its nightlife with the need to ensure peace and quiet for its residents. The ordinances aim to create a more harmonious environment in Milan’s most frequented areas.
