Naples, June 17 – A 27-year-old fugitive, Luigi Barbareschi, wanted since November 2024 for attempted murder, was apprehended yesterday at a christening party in Posillipo. Plainclothes carabinieri, who had infiltrated the celebration, arrested Barbareschi after he attempted a desperate escape into the sea.
Dramatic Arrest at a Seaside Villa
The arrest took place at an exclusive villa in Posillipo, a short distance from the famous “fenestrella” of Marechiaro, where a christening celebration was underway. Barbareschi, who had been on the run for months, was wanted to serve a 10-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of Giuseppe Orefice, a prominent figure in the rival Orefice clan from Castello di Cisterna.
Carabinieri from the Operational Section of Castello di Cisterna had been monitoring Barbareschi’s extensive network of contacts for months. They received intelligence that the 27-year-old would be attending a friend’s son’s christening at the restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
The officers blended in with the guests, locating Barbareschi inside the venue. They waited for the opportune moment to avoid disrupting the ceremony and endangering other attendees. When Barbareschi momentarily isolated himself from the other guests, the carabinieri moved in.
Attempted Escape and Family Confrontation
Barbareschi immediately realized that the plainclothes officers were there for him. Surrounded and seeing no other escape route, he looked towards the cliff, desperately considering jumping into the water to evade arrest. However, the lack of space made the attempt impossible.
The fugitive surrendered and was handcuffed. The reaction from his relatives present at the party was immediate and furious, with insults and shoves directed at the officers. Tensions subsided only after Barbareschi was escorted out of the premises. He is now being held at the Secondigliano penitentiary.
Background to a Camorra Feud
Barbareschi’s arrest marks a crucial chapter in a violent Camorra feud that has plagued the “Legge 219” public housing complex in Castello di Cisterna for years. Investigators consider the 27-year-old a significant military element of the rival D’Ambrosio clan.
The crime for which he was convicted dates back to the evening of May 16, 2021. On that occasion, Barbareschi, along with Marco D’Ambrosio, son of boss Giuseppe ‘o Cacaglio, ambushed Giuseppe Orefice. The victim was shot nine times with a 7.65 caliber pistol, including a point-blank shot to the chest, and only survived after delicate surgery.
According to the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, that ambush was the armed response of the new generation of the D’Ambrosio clan to curb the rise of the Orefice clan and maintain absolute control over the lucrative drug dealing squares in the neighborhood. This ruthless war between young individuals was interrupted by the carabinieri’s investigations and culminated yesterday, amidst the banquet tables of Marechiaro, with the end of Barbareschi’s fugitive status.
The incident highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat organized crime in the Naples area, even in the face of public resistance and volatile situations. The successful apprehension of Barbareschi is a testament to the persistent surveillance and strategic planning employed by the carabinieri to bring wanted criminals to justice.
This arrest is expected to have significant repercussions on the power dynamics within the local Camorra factions, potentially leading to further instability or a shift in control over illicit activities in the region. Authorities remain vigilant, anticipating any retaliatory actions or attempts by other clan members to fill the void left by Barbareschi’s capture.
The local community, often caught in the crossfire of such conflicts, remains hopeful that these law enforcement successes will contribute to a more secure environment, despite the immediate disruptions caused by such dramatic events.
