NAPLES, April 29, 2026 – A fire occurred last Friday night in the Pathology Department of the Naples Cancer Institute, led by Dr. Gerardo Ferrara. The Institute announced that, according to Carabinieri reconstruction, the flames originated from a short circuit in electrical panels located in the basement. Smoke spread through ventilators to some upper-floor departments, but no injuries or structural damage rendering the building unusable were reported. Firefighters secured the premises, with current damages limited to the affected area.

Biological Samples Destroyed, Patient Notification Underway

The fire, however, led to the destruction of approximately ten histological slides stored in the department. Emergency procedures were immediately activated. Director-General Maurizio Di Mauro has ordered investigations to precisely identify the patients whose samples were damaged. Competent departments will promptly contact these patients to discuss the most appropriate actions.

The Institute confirmed that all necessary measures have been implemented to ensure environmental safety and service continuity. The department’s operations are scheduled to resume fully on Monday.

Institute Prioritizes Patient Assistance and Transparency

“The incident that occurred represents a serious event. However, our priority at this moment is to protect the involved patients, ensuring them maximum assistance and transparency,” stated Director-General Di Mauro. “The Institute is working tirelessly to fully restore activities and guarantee high standards of safety and quality.”

Accidental Causes Suspected, Investigations Ongoing

The fire’s cause is currently attributed to accidental circumstances, specifically a short circuit. Authorities are continuing their investigations to confirm the exact sequence of events that led to the blaze. The rapid response of the fire department helped contain the damage and prevent further spread.

Ensuring Continuity of Services

Despite the setback, the Naples Cancer Institute is committed to maintaining its high level of care. The swift activation of emergency protocols and the planned resumption of full departmental activities underscore the Institute’s dedication to its patients and research. The incident highlights the importance of robust safety measures and rapid response systems in critical healthcare facilities.

The Institute’s management has assured the public that patient safety and the integrity of medical services remain paramount. Further updates will be provided as the situation progresses and investigations conclude.
