A tragic car accident on Rome’s Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) on Thursday morning, April 30, 2026, claimed the life of a 74-year-old man. The collision, a rear-end impact involving a Fiat Punto and a BMW X2, occurred around 5:30 AM on the outer carriageway, near kilometer 2. Two other individuals, a 73-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Aurelia Hospital by 118 emergency personnel.
Major Traffic Disruptions Following the Incident
The fatal crash led to significant traffic disruptions on the GRA. Both the central and overtaking lanes on the outer carriageway were temporarily closed at kilometer 1.900, in the vicinity of Via Aurelia. This resulted in considerable queues and slowdowns for morning commuters.
Emergency teams from Anas and the traffic police from the Settebagni sub-section were dispatched to the scene to manage traffic flow and work towards restoring normal road conditions as quickly as possible. Law enforcement officials have also initiated an investigation to determine the exact dynamics and causes of the collision.
Another Tragedy on the Raccordo’s Roads
This incident marks another tragedy on the roads of the Grande Raccordo Anulare. Less than two weeks prior, between April 17 and 18, a 35-year-old man lost his life in a similar collision. That accident, involving two cars traveling in the same direction at kilometer 62.200, resulted in the immediate death of the driver. A 35-year-old female passenger was hospitalized in serious condition, while the driver of the other vehicle escaped unharmed.
The recurring nature of such severe incidents on the GRA highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety and traffic management in the area. Authorities are continually working to enhance safety measures and reduce the incidence of fatal accidents on this critical artery of Rome’s road network.
The investigation into Thursday’s collision is ongoing, with police gathering evidence and witness statements to fully understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
