Rome, June 15 – A fire erupted today in a green area adjacent to the Castelfusano Pinewood, specifically in via del Lido di Castel Porziano, 62, close to the Infernetto neighborhood. The incident has led to the temporary evacuation of several nearby residences as a precautionary measure, while firefighters, supported by aerial units, work to extinguish the flames.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

The operational room dispatched six fire brigades to the scene, including tanker trucks with a capacity of 40,000 liters. The fire, which started in a patch of dry vegetation, quickly spread, necessitating a robust response. The Director of Extinguishing Operations (DOS) is coordinating efforts, including aerial drops from helicopters and Canadair aircraft that have been deployed to the area.

Local police from the X Gruppo Mare are also present to manage traffic and ensure the safety of the area. Via del Lido di Castel Porziano has been closed for a significant stretch to facilitate emergency operations.

Previous Incidents and Environmental Concerns

This is not the first time this area has experienced such an event. In recent weeks, other smaller fires have broken out in the vicinity, which falls within the State Natural Reserve of the Roman Coast, encompassing the Castelfusano Pinewood. The recurring nature of these fires raises concerns about environmental protection and fire prevention measures in the reserve.

Impact on Residents and Traffic

The temporary evacuation affected homes, nurseries, and riding schools situated near the fire. While no injuries have been reported, the disruption has been significant for residents. The closure of via del Lido di Castel Porziano has caused considerable traffic delays, impacting daily routines for those in the Infernetto area.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency services. The investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to commence once the blaze is fully under control.

The State Natural Reserve of the Roman Coast is a vital ecological area, and repeated fire incidents pose a serious threat to its biodiversity and natural landscape. Efforts to prevent such occurrences are crucial for the long-term preservation of this important natural heritage.
