Four Indicted After Pastry Chef’s Fatal Fall from Naples Hospital
Naples, May 30 – Four individuals have been indicted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Naples as part of an investigation into the death of Maria Carmela D’Angelo, a 58-year-old pastry chef from Roccadaspide. D’Angelo tragically died after falling from the third floor of the Burn Unit at Cardarelli Hospital in Naples.
The indictment of the four hospital employees, who were on duty at the time of the incident, is a necessary technical step ahead of the autopsy ordered by investigators. The autopsy, considered an unrepeatable technical assessment, will be performed on Monday, June 1, allowing those involved in the proceedings to appoint their own consultants to assist with the examination.
Tragic Incident Follows Workplace Accident
The tragedy occurred on the morning of Tuesday, May 26, within Pavilion E of the Neapolitan hospital. D’Angelo had been hospitalized for approximately a week following a severe workplace accident at her pastry shop in the Fonte frazione of Roccadaspide, in the province of Salerno. During the incident, she sustained serious burns to her upper body and face from contact with boiling oil and flames while frying sweets in her laboratory.
Despite the severity of her injuries, D’Angelo’s clinical condition was reportedly improving. According to medical staff, as well as friends and relatives, the patient was not considered to be in immediate danger of death. In fact, on the day of the tragedy, she was scheduled to be transferred to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department to continue her treatment.
Unclear Circumstances Surrounding the Fall
According to the hospital’s reconstruction of events, Maria Carmela D’Angelo left her room and headed towards the department’s restrooms, likely seeking more privacy. Shortly thereafter, the dramatic incident that cost her life unfolded.
The case still presents numerous aspects that require clarification, and investigations are currently focused on these points. Making it even more difficult to understand what happened are the woman’s conditions, which had been described as relatively reassuring until the day before. Just twenty-four hours prior to the tragedy, the 58-year-old had spoken with her family from her hospital bed.
A Dedicated Entrepreneur
Maria Carmela D’Angelo was described as a tireless worker, a generous woman, and a determined entrepreneur. Starting from nothing, she had managed to create a business that exported Cilento sweets throughout Europe and to the United States.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Naples is continuing its investigation to shed full light on the circumstances leading to D’Angelo’s death. The autopsy results are expected to provide crucial information for the ongoing inquiry.
