Accident on Rome-Fiumicino Motorway Causes Major Traffic Disruption

Rome, May 18 – A multi-vehicle accident on the A91 Rome-Fiumicino motorway has brought traffic to a standstill, creating extensive queues and significant delays for commuters traveling in and out of the capital. The incident occurred shortly before the exit for Rome-Civitavecchia, necessitating the immediate intervention of numerous emergency vehicles.

Traffic Gridlock Extends to Both Directions

The collision, which involved several vehicles, caused severe repercussions not only for traffic heading towards central Rome but also for those traveling in the direction of Ostia. The on-ramps and feeder roads to the motorway are also heavily congested, leading to widespread gridlock across the affected areas.

While emergency services are actively engaged at the scene, the exact number of injured individuals has not yet been released. The presence of multiple rescue vehicles has further contributed to the complete blocking of circulation, particularly for those entering Rome, where kilomter-long queues have been reported.

Alternative Routes Advised Amidst Chaos

Authorities are advising drivers to seek alternative routes to avoid the severe congestion. For those currently on the road, Via Portuense or Via del Mare are suggested as viable options to bypass the affected section of the A91 motorway.

This incident adds to a series of recent traffic-related events in Rome. Earlier reports from Rinaldo Frignani highlighted a worrying trend of accidents involving intoxicated drivers and mobile phone usage, leading to an increase in license revocations and fatalities. Recent tragedies include a motorcyclist’s death on Via Casilina after a collision with a car, and a pedestrian being hit and killed in Coccia di Morto. Another fatal accident involved a motorcyclist on the Raccordo, and a 24-year-old, Andrea Righi, died in a scooter-taxi collision on the Rome-Fiumicino, prompting his family to seek witnesses.

Ostia Bolsters Security Measures

In related news, Ostia is implementing a new security plan that includes video surveillance on streets, checkpoints on the Colombo, increased police presence, and improved lighting, as reported by Rinaldo Frignani. These measures aim to enhance safety and mitigate future incidents in the area.

The current traffic situation underscores the critical need for caution on Rome’s roadways. Drivers are urged to remain patient, follow traffic advisories, and consider alternative transportation methods if possible.
