International Drug Trafficking Ring Dismantled: 19 Arrests Across Italy
Rome, May 18, 2026 – A major anti-drug operation, stemming from a previous investigation, has led to the arrest of 19 individuals across Italy. The operation targeted an international drug trafficking ring with its logistical base in Aprilia, which supplied drug markets in various Italian provinces, including those in the Castelli Romani area and the province of Rome.
The arrests were carried out on Monday, May 18, 2026, at dawn, following an investigation that uncovered a sophisticated network involved in international drug trafficking, extortion, receiving stolen goods, and illegal possession of firearms.
Operation Centered in Aprilia
The investigation, initiated in Aprilia, identified the city as the central hub of the criminal organization. The operation extended to several other municipalities, including Cisterna, Nettuno, Ciampino, Anzio, Velletri, Amelia, Sant’Agata del Bianco, Castelletto Sopra Ticino, and Cappadocia, highlighting the widespread reach of the trafficking network.
Massive Drug Flow from Belgium to Italy
Authorities confirmed the movement of approximately 100 kilograms of narcotics, including hashish, marijuana, and hashish oil, along with about 10 kilograms of cocaine. These drugs were distributed to various drug markets across different Italian provinces. During the course of the investigation, five individuals were arrested in flagrante delicto, and approximately two kilograms of cocaine were seized.
Weapons and Intimidation Tactics
The criminal group also possessed a significant arsenal of weapons, including an assault rifle, which were used to intimidate and threaten defaulting buyers. Among the victims of the organization was the owner of a restaurant in Aprilia, who was subjected to intimidation. The organization also utilized a car rental company, based in Aprilia, to facilitate the commercialization and movement of the illicit drugs.
MIUR Employee Involved in Marijuana Cultivation
A notable discovery during the investigation was the involvement of an employee from the Ministry of Education (MIUR). This individual was tasked with overseeing the entire process of marijuana cultivation and production in a greenhouse. Each ‘harvest’ cycle generated approximately 60,000 euros for the organization.
Dawn Raids and Arrests
The extensive operation culminated in a series of dawn raids. The Territorial Carabinieri Department, in collaboration with other competent territorial commands across Italy, the Canine Unit of Ponte Galeria, and the Helicopter Unit of Pratica di Mare, executed an arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge of the Rome court at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of the capital. The warrant targeted 19 individuals, with 13 remanded in custody and six placed under house arrest. Eighteen of the arrests were executed on Monday morning.
The successful operation marks a significant blow to organized crime in the Lazio region and underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat international drug trafficking and related criminal activities.
