Rome, May 18 – Four healthcare professionals were injured in a violent assault at the Sant’Andrea University Hospital in Rome. The incident, which took place in the Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment Service (SPDC), involved a patient known for previous aggressive behavior. Confintesa Sanità union has strongly denounced the attack, highlighting critical failures in internal security systems and the broader territorial healthcare network.

Violent Attack on Hospital Staff

The assault occurred this morning, targeting the on-duty team in the SPDC unit. According to Confintesa Sanità, the patient, who has a history of repeated hospitalizations and prior attacks on staff, violently attacked the medical personnel. The incident resulted in:

  • A slap to the head doctor responsible for the ward.
  • A doctor being punched in the face, sustaining a broken lip.
  • Two nurses being punched.

Police officers from the Ponte Milvio and Flaminio commissariats were called to the scene by hospital staff.

Patient’s History and Immediate Re-admission

The severity of the incident is compounded by the patient’s recent history. Just days prior, the individual had been discharged and transferred to another clinic. However, he was immediately sent back to Sant’Andrea after assaulting an operator at that facility. This rapid re-admission highlights a systemic issue within the healthcare system, according to the union.
