Natasha Farinelli’s ‘Ladri di Salute’ Exposes Healthcare System Failures in Naples
Naples, April 30 – Natasha Farinelli, a prominent journalist and correspondent for Mediaset’s “Fuori dal Coro,” presented her new book, “Ladri di Salute” (Thieves of Health), yesterday, April 29, at the Mondadori bookstore in Via degli Acquari 2, Naples. The book is a scathing indictment of the Italian national healthcare system, focusing on the critical issues that force thousands of people to abandon essential medical care and prevention.
Farinelli, known for her investigative reporting since 2014, emphasized the dire consequences of long waiting lists for medical appointments. “Thousands of people are giving up on treatment, giving up on check-ups, on prevention, and this is a total failure of our national healthcare system,” Farinelli stated during the presentation. She added, “The book starts with waiting lists because not being able to get an appointment within the stipulated time means that the reference health company is breaking the law.”
Key Issues Highlighted in ‘Ladri di Salute’
The book delves into several critical areas where the healthcare system is failing its citizens:
- Abandoned Caregivers: The book sheds light on the plight of caregivers, particularly mothers like Anna Combatti, who was present at the presentation. Combatti, a caregiver mother who has fought for her son’s rights for years, shared her struggles. Farinelli described her as “a strong woman who fights for herself and her son Liberato, but also a very fragile woman who has had to endure so many things.”
- Neglected Children: Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder often do not receive the necessary rehabilitation therapies or care allowances in regions like Campania.
- Emergency Room Overload: Patients are often forgotten on stretchers in emergency rooms, highlighting systemic inefficiencies.
- Medical Errors: The book addresses medical errors that frequently go unpunished, denying justice to victims.
- Personal Account: Farinelli also shares a personal story, adding a deeply human dimension to her investigation.
Farinelli’s growing awareness of the widespread nature of these problems, and the resignation of many citizens, prompted her to write “Ladri di Salute.”
Long Waiting Lists: A Major Obstacle to Care
Farinelli recounted absurd situations encountered during her research into waiting lists. “With waiting lists, I found myself facing absurd situations, very important post-operative cancer check-ups were scheduled even two years later,” she revealed. She acknowledged the dedication of healthcare professionals, stating, “We have extraordinary doctors, we have extraordinary nurses, but we risk losing staff because many doctors are retiring, and the age threshold of Italians is constantly increasing.”
The journalist called for concrete action from institutions, moving beyond mere electoral promises. “From institutions, I expect something concrete to be done, not electoral spots, and if someone makes a mistake, they must pay,” Farinelli asserted. She criticized the practice of offering production bonuses to managers of healthcare facilities with excessively long waiting lists, calling for “greater vigilance over the actions of healthcare administrations, more funds, and more attention to human life, because people are not numbers, and the right to health, I think, measures the level of a self-proclaimed civil society.”
The presentation also featured the publisher, Mario Savonardo, and Dr. Gaetano Marotta, alongside Anna Combatti, whose personal testimony underscored the book’s urgent message.
