Rome Hosts Special Olympics International Rowing Meeting
ROME, April 25 – The Special Olympics International Rowing Meeting 2026 officially began in Rome yesterday, April 24, and will continue until April 26. The event is being held at the picturesque Reale Circolo Canottieri Tevere Remo, transforming the club into a vibrant hub for athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, coaches, and delegations from Italy and several international countries.
International participation includes delegations from Germany, Greece, Libya, and Portugal, highlighting the growing European and Mediterranean scope of the project. This meeting serves as a tangible opportunity to foster inclusion, build authentic relationships, and promote personal growth through sport. Rowing, a discipline that demands listening, coordination, and mutual trust, becomes a powerful symbol and tool for integration, where every athlete is an essential part of the crew.
“Looking back to move Forward” – A Guiding Principle
The 2026 edition’s motto, “Looking back to move Forward,” encapsulates the profound meaning of the project: to value the journey already made in order to continue growing. Every experience forms the foundation for new opportunities, in a movement that looks ahead, drawing strength and vigor from what it has built.
The Special Olympics Rowing 2026 project was conceived with this specific goal: to develop a path that combines competitions, training, and international exchange. At its core is the individual, with their right to fully participate in social and sporting life. In this vision, sport becomes a powerful instrument to strengthen autonomy, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.
Introduced in Italy in 2005 and recognized as an official Special Olympics discipline since 2011, rowing continues to expand across the national territory. The 2026 project marks a decisive step towards greater dissemination and international openness, with Italy serving as a pilot example and a point of reference.
Unified Experience and Coach for Inclusion Program
Among the most significant moments of the Meeting is the Unified Experience, scheduled for Sunday. This event will feature mixed crews composed of athletes, unified partners, and institutional representatives rowing together. This highly symbolic experience translates the value of inclusion into practice: collaborating, supporting each other, and moving forward together towards a common goal.
Significant attention is also dedicated to training, with the “Coach for Inclusion” program. This initiative is aimed at Italian and international coaches, offering concrete tools to make training increasingly accessible and inclusive.
Preparation for Upcoming Events
The Meeting also represents a crucial preparatory stage for upcoming events: the National Summer Games in Lignano Sabbiadoro from May 19-24, and the Special Olympics National Games in Saarland, Germany, in June.
The event is made possible with the contribution of the Department for Policies in Favor of Persons with Disabilities and with the support of the Minister for Disabilities, confirming institutional commitment to promoting sport and inclusion. Inclusivity and accessibility will be ensured throughout the event, thanks to the presence of LIS interpreters and dedicated services, allowing everyone to fully experience this event without barriers.
