ROME, January 27 – The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Rome and Metropolitan Area has voiced strong concerns over recent demolition activities at the former Ex Mercati Generali site in Ostiense. According to the environmental organization, bulldozers have been actively clearing and uprooting riparian vegetation that had spontaneously developed over the past fifteen years within the abandoned construction site. This intervention, the WWF highlights, comes remarkably close to World Wetlands Day, scheduled for February 2.
Nature’s Free Restoration Erased
The WWF argues that these operations have effectively obliterated a natural ecosystem that had regenerated without cost in a part of the city heavily impacted by the urbanization of the 1950s and 1960s, now completely saturated with concrete. In this area, long left undisturbed, a nascent wetland ecosystem had formed, contributing to environmental balance in a significantly compromised urban context.
The association directly questions the necessity of the ongoing intervention, asking if it was truly essential to devastate a developing wetland forest, presenting the operation as a mere clearing of invasive vegetation. For the WWF, this description is inappropriate given what has been removed.
Environmentalists explain that poplars, willows, and common reeds were widespread, covering thousands of square meters just hours before the intervention. This vegetation contributed to oxygen production, temperature mitigation, and urban biodiversity, and, according to the WWF, could not be mistaken for invasive plants.
An Appeal to the Administration
Just days before the commencement of citizen participation tables, WWF Rome and Metropolitan Area is appealing to the municipal councilors for Environment and Urban Planning, urging them to reconsider the design of new building volumes planned for this public property. The association emphasizes that in the area beyond the Tiber, there are no green spaces of comparable extension and environmental value, and therefore calls for this unique characteristic to be taken into account in future urban planning decisions.
