Milan Grapples with Extensive Blackouts as Heatwave Intensifies

Milan and its surrounding municipalities experienced significant power disruptions on Monday, June 22, as an intense heatwave gripped the region. The surge in electricity demand, primarily driven by the widespread use of air conditioning, led to numerous blackouts across the city, impacting daily life, public services, and local businesses.

City Council Session Halted Due to Power Issues

One of the most notable disruptions occurred at Palazzo Marino, where the Milan City Council session was adjourned prematurely. Voltage drops caused repeated server failures, rendering it impossible to continue the proceedings. Council President Elena Buscemi eventually declared an early end to the session, highlighting the pervasive nature of the power crisis.

Widespread Residential and Commercial Impact

Reports from various parts of Milan indicated widespread outages affecting residential buildings and commercial establishments. In Via Manin, located in the Repubblica area, several buildings were without power from 5 PM. Technicians from Unareti, the local utility company, were dispatched to investigate the cause, which was initially suspected to be a fault in the low-voltage cable. Throughout Monday afternoon, approximately 20 elevators across Milan became stuck due to power fluctuations, prompting interventions from the fire department.

Hinterland Communities Also Severely Affected

The blackouts extended beyond the city center, severely impacting several communities in the Milanese hinterland. In Opera, south of Milan, emergency power restoration efforts continued into the evening, with Unareti technicians working non-stop to fully reactivate the network. Cesano Boscone also experienced extensive outages, with areas such as Via Ariosto, Tessera, and Giardino plunged into darkness. Sesto San Giovanni reported power interruptions in multiple zones, including the Rondò area.

San Giuliano Milanese Endures Prolonged Outages

San Giuliano Milanese, located in the south-east hinterland, faced continuous blackouts from Friday, causing significant inconvenience to thousands of residents. Mayor Marco Segala convened the civil protection unit and activated an emergency mobile number to address the crisis. Critical infrastructure, including municipal buildings, local police stations, supermarkets, and various shops, were among those isolated by the power failures. Initial reports suggested faults across three main distribution lines. Power was eventually restored to the entire town around 6 PM on Sunday, following extensive repair work.

Unareti Technicians Working Tirelessly Amidst High Demand

Unareti confirmed that its technical teams have been operating continuously to address the numerous faults and restore power. The unprecedented demand for electricity, primarily due to air conditioning during the heatwave, has put immense strain on the power grid. While immediate repairs are underway, the company emphasized the complexity of resolving widespread issues caused by such extreme conditions.

Future Outlook and Preparedness

Authorities have not yet released detailed information regarding long-term solutions or preventative measures to mitigate future blackouts during similar weather events. However, the widespread nature of these outages underscores the growing challenges posed by climate change and the need for robust infrastructure to support increasing energy demands. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions during periods of extreme heat.
