Rome, January 6, 2026 – Two distinct incidents occurring on the outskirts of Rome saw two women struck by vehicles in less than 48 hours, between January 3rd and 5th. These events highlight persistent concerns regarding pedestrian safety in the Lazio region and the capital, which recorded the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in Italy in 2024.
Double Incident in Anguillara Sabazia
On Saturday, January 3rd, a 59-year-old woman from Rome was hit by a 56-year-old man riding a Honda 150 scooter on Via Anguillarese 88 in Anguillara Sabazia. Following the initial impact, she was then struck by a car driven by another woman, also from Rome, after being propelled into the opposite lane. An ambulance transported the victim, who sustained serious injuries, to Sant’Andrea Hospital, where she remains hospitalized. According to carabinieri, who are investigating the dynamics of the accident, her life is not in danger. This incident underscores the precariousness of pedestrian safety, even in seemingly routine situations.
Collision in Castel Gandolfo
A second incident occurred on January 5th in Castel Gandolfo, where a 58-year-old Ukrainian woman, a resident of Albano Laziale, was hit by a car while crossing a pedestrian stripe at the intersection of Via del Mare and Via Perugia. A 44-year-old man from Frascati was driving the vehicle. Emergency services and the Castel Gandolfo mobile carabinieri unit responded to the scene. The woman was transported in critical condition to the Castelli di Ariccia Hospital, but her injuries are not life-threatening. This event further emphasizes the vulnerability of pedestrians, even when utilizing designated crossing areas.
Pedestrian Fatalities in Italy: A Growing Concern
Despite pedestrian stripes being designated safe crossing areas, 200 pedestrians lost their lives on these very crossings in Italy in 2025. According to the latest data from the Sapidata-Asaps observatory, the Lazio region unfortunately leads the national ranking for pedestrian fatalities, with 65 deaths in 2025, 36 of which occurred in Rome alone. These alarming statistics suggest a critical need for enhanced road safety measures and increased awareness among both drivers and pedestrians.
