Rome, June 20 – The long-standing protest by residents of Tuscia against the proposed National Radioactive Waste Repository in the Viterbo area escalated today as a flotilla of yellow flags and umbrellas sailed down the Tiber River in Rome. The demonstration, organized by a coalition of committees, mayors, and the Province of Viterbo, aimed to draw national attention to their four-year struggle against the facility, which they deem incompatible with their agricultural region and a potential threat to the capital.

A National Concern: From Tuscia to the Tiber

The issue of where to store Italy’s radioactive waste has been a protracted national challenge. For over four years, the Tuscia region has been at the forefront of this debate, as 40% of the potentially suitable sites identified by Sogin-the state company responsible for decommissioning nuclear plants and securing radioactive waste-are located in the Viterbo province.
