A tragic incident occurred on the A1 motorway near Caserta yesterday, April 20, when a 55-year-old truck driver, Luigi Nappo from Marano di Napoli, was killed after being hit by a car. Nappo was on foot during a protest against rising fuel costs, which had brought heavy vehicles to a halt on the roadside.

Fatal Incident During Fuel Cost Protest

The incident took place near the San Nicola La Strada service area in the province of Caserta. Nappo was reportedly on the clear lane, attempting to manage the flow of trucks, when he was struck by a Mini Cooper. The driver of the car, a 23-year-old from Caserta with no prior record, stopped at the scene and was later reported for vehicular homicide. He was taken to the hospital for tests to determine if he had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Protest Suspended After Tragedy

The truck drivers’ strike, organized by Trasporto Unito and scheduled from April 20 to April 25, was suspended shortly before 5 AM today, April 21, following Nappo’s death. Maurizio Longo, the general secretary of Trasporto Unito, announced the suspension, stating, “The protest had just begun at midnight, and we were setting up the pickets when a speeding car near Caserta hit and killed an owner-operator who was organizing the picket.” Longo added, “We gradually began to suspend the strike from dawn because this incident shocked us. He was a young person with a family.”

Details of the Strike and Its Impact

The protest was organized to highlight the severe impact of rising fuel costs on the trucking industry. Truck drivers had gathered on the A1, causing significant disruption. The suspension of the strike, while a direct response to the tragedy, also underscores the deep-seated issues facing the transport sector in Italy.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The 23-year-old driver of the Mini Cooper faces charges of vehicular homicide, and the outcome of the toxicology tests is awaited. The incident has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing debate about workers’ rights and safety during protests.

This event highlights the dangers associated with roadside protests and the urgent need for safe and regulated environments for such demonstrations. The trucking community, deeply affected by the loss of one of its members, now faces the challenge of continuing its advocacy for better working conditions and fairer economic policies in the wake of this tragedy.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for dialogue between transport unions and government officials to address the concerns of truck drivers and prevent future tragedies.
