Rome, May 25 – With the arrival of summer and hot nights prompting residents to leave windows open, the nightmare of apartment burglaries has returned to Rome. Three Georgian citizens, aged 37, 38, and 39, previously unknown to justice, were arrested on Saturday after resisting police intervention to thwart a nocturnal intrusion into an apartment on Viale dei Consoli, in the Don Bosco district.
Police Interventions and the Georgian Connection
This latest incident is part of a growing trend. Just days prior, Carabinieri apprehended burglars in action, and before that, police intervened in the Viale Marconi area. In all cases, the perpetrators were members of gangs, predominantly Georgian nationals, who travel to the capital for short periods. Their modus operandi involves committing burglaries, almost always without violence, and then quickly departing by plane.
This phenomenon has been a recurring focus of police and Carabinieri investigations, highlighting the skill of certain individuals within these groups to rapidly open even the latest generation of armored door locks, both day and night. On the night of the Don Bosco incident, at least four individuals attempted to burgle the apartment – with one still at large – but were surprised by officers who arrested three after a violent struggle. Burglary tools were also recovered at the scene.
Rising Concerns Ahead of Summer Holidays
There is growing concern that these incidents are just a prelude to what could unfold in the coming weeks as Romans begin their summer holidays and leave the city. The police are bracing for a potential increase in such crimes.
Expert Lock-Picking and Organized Crime
Authorities have long noted the sophisticated methods employed by these groups, particularly their ability to bypass advanced security systems. This suggests a level of organization and specialized knowledge among the perpetrators, making them a persistent challenge for law enforcement.
Community Impact and Prevention
The surge in burglaries has raised alarm among residents, especially those in areas like Don Bosco and Viale Marconi. While police efforts have led to arrests, the transient nature of these gangs makes sustained prevention difficult. Residents are advised to take extra precautions to secure their homes, even during hot nights when windows might be left open for ventilation.
Ongoing Investigations and Future Outlook
Investigations into these organized burglary rings are ongoing. Authorities are working to identify and dismantle these networks to protect residents and their property. The focus remains on both immediate response to incidents and broader strategies to counter this recurring summer crime wave.
