ROME, June 7, 2026 – Three individuals were arrested by the Rome South Traffic Police after they defrauded a woman from Belluno. The arrests followed a high-speed chase on the A1 motorway, where an Audi Q5 carrying the suspects was spotted by officers.
High-Speed Chase Leads to Arrests
The vehicle, with three people on board, was observed traveling at high speed on the southbound carriageway of the A1 motorway, at approximately Km 580. The car had been flagged to the Highway Operations Center by the Feltre Carabinieri Company (Belluno), as it had been seen near a residence where a fraud had just occurred.
After a pursuit of about one kilometer, the police successfully stopped the vehicle. During document checks, the occupants displayed extreme nervousness, prompting officers to conduct a search of the car.
Stolen Jewels and Tools of the Trade Discovered
The suspicions proved to be well-founded. Inside the car, officers found a grey bag containing gold jewelry and precious stones, as well as cash. None of the occupants could provide a legitimate explanation for their possession. Furthermore, several mobile phones, some still-sealed SIM cards, lenses, monoculars, and a precision scale were also discovered within the vehicle’s interior.
In addition, numerous gold trinkets were found hidden in the socks of one of the three men, further solidifying the evidence against them.
Collaboration Confirms Fraud and Identifies Victim
Synergistic efforts with the Belluno Carabinieri Company allowed for the confirmation of the fraud and the identification of the victim. The modus operandi was consistent with a common scam: the woman had been contacted by telephone by a man posing as a Carabinieri officer. He informed her that her car had been seen leaving the scene of a jewelry store robbery and that, to confirm her non-involvement, she needed to hand over all her valuables to a court official who would soon arrive at her home.
The woman confirmed that the recovered jewelry belonged to her after photos of the loot were sent to the Santa Giustina Bellunese Carabinieri station. She also recognized one of the men as the individual to whom she had handed over the precious items.
Suspects Jailed, Valuables Returned
The three men were arrested and taken to Regina Coeli prison. All the recovered valuables were returned to their rightful owner.
This case highlights the ongoing vigilance of law enforcement in combating fraud and the importance of inter-agency cooperation in bringing criminals to justice. The Belluno Carabinieri and the Rome South Traffic Police demonstrated effective teamwork in swiftly apprehending the suspects and recovering the stolen property.
