Naples, April 11 – The hypothesis of mistaken identity is gaining traction in the investigation into the murder of Fabio Ascione, the 20-year-old killed in Ponticelli, a district of Naples, on the morning of March 31. Ascione was hit by a barrage of bullets while with friends at the Lively Coffee, moments before returning home from work. The murder was initially inexplicable, as Ascione had no criminal record and no known ties to Camorra clans. However, according to Il Mattino, investigators are now focusing on a minor from a commando unit that, it is believed, had another person as their target.

Teenager Suspected of Killing Ascione by Mistake

As previously reported, Il Mattino states that in the early hours of March 31, a group of people had gathered under the portico of the Topolino park in Ponticelli. At that moment, a commando unit arrived, reportedly from the Neapolitan hinterland, with their sights set on that group of rivals. A volley of shots was fired, tragically striking Fabio Ascione by chance as the true targets of the ambush fled. One of the bullets, as known, struck him in the chest, leaving him no chance of survival.

Il Mattino reports that the Carabinieri may have identified one of the young members of the commando who took Fabio Ascione’s life, and it is believed to be a minor. Military personnel, coordinated by prosecutors Alfredo Gagliardi and Sergio Raimondi of the DDA and deputy Sergio Amato, are piecing together the events of that fateful morning.

The Murder of Fabio Ascione

As already mentioned, the details of the case are becoming clearer with the ongoing work of investigators. On March 31, in via Carlo Miranda, the commando clearly had a specific target in mind. On one side, Fabio Ascione and his friends were returning from work, while on the other, a group of young people was present in the area. These latter individuals were likely the intended targets, but upon the arrival of the speeding car, everyone scattered. Fabio Ascione, in his innocence, was likely caught off guard by the sudden chaos. He collapsed on the asphalt, still wearing his work clothes from the Bingo in Cercola, where he had just finished his shift.

His Mother’s Phone Call

Around 5 AM, Fabio was already inside the Lively Coffee, about to buy a croissant and cigarettes before heading home. At that very moment, his phone rang. On the other end, his mother was calling, urging him to return home before she left for work. Fabio had reassured her: “I’ll grab a croissant, buy some cigarettes, and I’ll be right home, don’t worry.” Then came the tragedy that reopened old wounds in those streets, now under the grip of the De Micco clan.
