Suspected Ebola Case in Cagliari, Man Hospitalized with Symptoms
Cagliari, May 31, 2026 – A suspected case of Ebola has been identified in Cagliari, involving a Congolese citizen who recently returned from Kinshasa. The man, who resides in the Sardinian capital, was hospitalized after presenting symptoms consistent with the virus. Samples have been collected and transported to the Spallanzani Institute in Rome for urgent analysis, with results anticipated by Monday.
The alert was raised after the man, who had traveled to his native country to visit relatives, began to feel unwell a few days after his return. He had flown from Kinshasa to Fiumicino, Rome, with a layover in Cairo. The local health authority (ASL) was immediately notified.
Emergency Response and Isolation Measures
To transport the suspected patient from his home to the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari, an entire street was closed for an hour. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM in Via Manno, a central area of the city. In accordance with established protocols, police, firefighters, and local police supported the 118 emergency services. Medical personnel, equipped with aseptic suits and masks, entered the residence to retrieve the patient.
According to the Ministry of Health, which is in constant contact with local health authorities and the Spallanzani Institute, the patient is currently in isolation at the hospital. A military helicopter is transporting the samples to Rome. Should the tests confirm Ebola, the man will be transferred to the Spallanzani Institute, which serves as the national reference center for infectious diseases.

Flights carrying at-risk passengers are mandated to land at Fiumicino Airport, designated as a health hub. Regional authorities are also tasked with identifying reference centers to manage any potential cases. The circular outlines five risk levels with corresponding safety measures, ranging from monitoring and availability for asymptomatic individuals without significant exposure to biocontainment transport for high-risk exposures.
