Storm Isolates Gulf of Naples Islands: Ischia, Procida, and Capri Cut Off

Naples, January 10, 2026 – The Gulf of Naples is experiencing significant disruption to maritime transport as strong winds and rough seas have led to the complete isolation of its major islands. Ischia, Procida, and Capri are currently unreachable, with all ferry and hydrofoil services suspended since last night due to severe weather conditions.

The wind, blowing from the west, has sustained intensities exceeding 40 knots, causing the sea to become extremely choppy with waves reaching up to three and a half meters in height. This challenging environment has made all sea connections impossible, leading to a total halt in services.

Ischia and Procida: All Connections Halted

For Ischia and Procida, all hydrofoils departing from Naples and Pozzuoli towards Marina Grande, Ischia Porto, and Forio are currently docked. Ferry services from Porta di Massa and the Flegrean port, initially scheduled until early afternoon, have also been suspended after a few early morning departures.

Capri Also Isolated Amidst Stormy Seas

Capri faces a similar situation, being completely cut off due to what has been described as a stormy sea. Maritime conditions, characterized by sea state 6/7 and wind gusts reaching 40 knots, have forced the suspension of all maritime connections to and from the island. Ferry and hydrofoil services to and from Naples, Sorrento, and Castellammare di Stabia have been cancelled, with some already suspended since yesterday afternoon.

Potential Prolonged Disruption

Given the weather forecast, it is anticipated that the suspension of services could extend throughout the entire day. Travelers planning to use sea transport are advised to check the situation with navigation companies via their call centers and websites before attempting to travel, awaiting potential improvements in sea conditions.

The disruption underscores the vulnerability of island communities to extreme weather events and highlights the critical role of reliable maritime transport for residents and tourists alike. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will resume services as soon as it is safe to do so.

The local economy, particularly tourism, may experience short-term impacts from these disruptions. However, the primary concern remains the safety of passengers and crew, prompting a cautious approach to resuming services.

This event follows a series of other significant news stories in the region, including protests in Iran, an arrest and release of Can Yaman in Turkey, and local issues such as a shortage of general practitioners in Naples and its province, leading to overburdened emergency rooms. These incidents collectively paint a picture of a dynamic and sometimes challenging environment both locally and internationally.

Local authorities are urging residents and visitors to stay informed through official channels and to prioritize safety during this period of adverse weather.
