Rome, January 11, 2026 – The mountains surrounding Rome, including Monte Livata, Terminillo, and Rocca Sinibalda in the province of Rieti, as well as parts of Abruzzo, were blanketed in snow this past weekend, fulfilling expectations for winter sports enthusiasts and those seeking picturesque snowy landscapes. However, the snowfall extended beyond the higher elevations, reaching the hills closer to the capital.
Snowfall Reaches 600 Meters East of Rome
As predicted, the snowline dropped significantly, bringing flakes to areas as low as 600 meters east of Rome. San Polo dei Cavalieri, near Tivoli, reported snow accumulation. The entire Aniene Valley has been under a civil protection snow alert since yesterday. Snow was also reported in the Prenestini mountains, in Capranica Prenestina, and up to the border with Ciociaria.
Ice Formations in the Castelli Area
While the Castelli area did not experience morning snowfall, low clouds and fog dominated the higher villages. Rocca di Papa and Rocca Priora reported ice formations due to the low temperatures. Similar conditions were observed on roads leading to Velletri. The only significant snow accumulation in the Castelli area occurred in wooded zones above 650 meters, particularly around Monte Cavo.
Yellow Alert for Wind Across Lazio and Rome
Rome has been experiencing precipitation since early this morning. A yellow alert for strong winds, issued by the Lazio Civil Protection, has been in effect since yesterday evening and is valid until tonight for the entire region, including the capital. Gale-force winds from the western quadrants, with strong gusts along coastal areas and possible storm surges on exposed coasts, were forecast from late Friday, January 9, and for the subsequent 24-36 hours.
Previous Weather Events and Future Outlook
This recent snowfall follows a period of cold weather in Rome, with previous reports of temperatures dropping to zero degrees and light snow in various districts of the capital. The city administration, under Mayor Gualtieri, had previously announced a winter plan to address potential snow and ice conditions. While the current focus is on the immediate weather situation, residents are advised to stay informed about further updates from civil protection authorities.
The current weather conditions highlight the varied winter climate of the Lazio region, where mountainous areas consistently receive heavy snowfall, and even lower elevations can be affected by significant weather events. The civil protection alerts serve as a reminder for residents to exercise caution, especially when traveling in affected areas.
Further updates on the weather situation and any potential disruptions will be provided by local authorities.
