Salvatore Lauro, Maritime Entrepreneur and Former Senator, Dies at 75

Naples, March 22 – Salvatore Lauro, a prominent figure in the Italian maritime industry and former Senator, passed away this morning at the age of 75. Lauro, born in Ischia, was the son of shipowner Agostino Lauro, who founded the family business. He led the Alilauro naval group, one of the most important holdings for fast transport in the Gulf of Naples and along major Italian maritime routes.

A Legacy in Maritime Transport

Since 1989, Salvatore Lauro had been at the helm of the family group, significantly developing maritime connections with the islands of the Gulf, including Ischia, Capri, and the Sorrento Peninsula. Under his leadership, the Alilauro brand solidified its position as one of the leading private operators in the sector, expanding connections and services across the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Political Career and Recognitions

Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Salvatore Lauro also held institutional positions. He was elected to the Senate in 1996 with Forza Italia, demonstrating his commitment to public service and his region. In 2024, he chronicled his entrepreneurial journey in the autobiography “Il mare dentro” (The Sea Within). Last year, Federitaly honored him with the title of “Ambassador of Italian Excellence in the World” for his significant contributions to the development of the national maritime sector.

Tributes from Regional Authorities

Massimiliano Manfredi, President of the Regional Council of Campania, expressed the legislative assembly’s condolences on Salvatore Lauro’s passing. “As a politician and a shipowner, Senator Salvatore Lauro expressed with commitment his bond with Campania and a political vision attentive to the world of business, work, and economy, aimed at the development and growth of the territory,” Manfredi stated, extending his personal and the Regional Council’s deepest sympathies to Lauro’s family.

Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi also offered his condolences via X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging Lauro’s leadership: “Salvatore Lauro skillfully guided a historic company in our territory, becoming a benchmark in the naval sector. On behalf of the Administration, I express heartfelt condolences to his children and the entire family.”

Severino Nappi, Deputy Coordinator of Lega Campania and member of the Federal Council of Lega, shared his profound sorrow: “Sincere pain for the sudden passing of my friend Salvatore Lauro, a dynamic, attentive, and far-sighted entrepreneur, but also an authoritative, serious, and correct man of institutions. Salvatore never failed to offer attention, advice, and proposals for our land, always suggested with style, grace, and balance, but also with the grit of someone with solid roots and strong values. With this gentle and available man, we lose a pillar of the country’s nautical entrepreneurship, whose love for our Ischia I will always remember. Salvatore leaves a void difficult to fill. A warm embrace to his beautiful family.”

His passing marks the end of an era for the maritime industry in Campania, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, leadership, and dedication to both business and public service.
