Rovigliano Islet in the Gulf of Naples Up for Sale: Potential Luxury Hotel for the Super-Rich
Naples, June 6 – The Rovigliano Islet, a prominent landmark in the Gulf of Naples, has been officially put up for sale by the German real estate agency Engel&Volkers. The announcement, initially met with skepticism by some, is indeed genuine, opening the door for a visionary project to transform the private island into a high-end hotel or a luxurious private residence.
A Symbol of the Gulf of Naples on the Market
The islet, strategically located at the mouth of the Sarno River, marking the boundary between Torre Annunziata and Castellammare di Stabia, offers breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius and Capri. Its private ownership, contrary to popular belief, is fragmented among dozens of heirs from the Brigante and Malafronte families, the last proprietors of the island.
Engel&Volkers is promoting the 5,800-square-meter island on www.immobiliare.it as "a blank canvas for a visionary and high-profile intervention," awaiting "a custodian capable of projecting it into the future, transforming it into a private residence of utmost prestige or an absolute top-tier hospitable refuge."
Ancient Fortress and Strict Conservation Rules
Massimo Salice, the Engel&Volkers representative handling inquiries, confirmed the presence of an existing 300-square-meter structure on the islet. This refers to an ancient fortress, featuring a well-preserved tower, dating back to the viceregal era. This historical asset is subject to stringent conservation regulations and multiple protections.
Salice emphasized that the agency is committed to finding a buyer who will respect the historical significance and existing constraints. "We are not in a hurry to sell," he stated, highlighting the complexity of gathering the necessary authorizations from the heirs, who reside in various countries worldwide.
International Interest and Undisclosed Price
Since the announcement, Salice has received numerous inquiries, including from a London-based fund and a major hotel chain, indicating strong international interest in the unique property. While the selling price of Rovigliano is not publicly disclosed, Salice commented that "for a Mediterranean island, it’s a good price."
Historically, the islet was known as Petra Herculis in classical times, believed to have been formed when Hercules hurled a rock from Mount Faito into the sea. In the medieval era, it became Insula Rubelliana, from which its current name, Rovigliano, is derived. In the 1930s, Antonio Brigante, a local entrepreneur, attempted to convert the ancient fortress into a restaurant and hotel, though the venture was ultimately unsuccessful.
The Rovigliano Islet was also proposed as one of the "places of the heart" by the FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) some years ago, though it received limited votes. This unique opportunity presents a rare chance for a visionary investor to breathe new life into a historical and symbolic gem of the Gulf of Naples, while adhering to its rich heritage and environmental protections.
