Rome, March 14 – The Opus Club, a well-known nightclub located on Via Giuseppe Sacconi in the Flaminio district, has been preventively sealed by police. The measure follows a lengthy inspection conducted overnight by officers from the administrative division of the Questura. The closure, which awaits judicial validation, was prompted by numerous irregularities, most notably exceeding the venue’s capacity of approximately 500 patrons.
Intensified Controls on Roman Nightlife
Among the violations reported against the club’s management were the obstruction of at least two emergency exits and inadequate cleanliness in the restrooms. This incident marks another significant closure in Rome’s entertainment scene, coming just weeks after similar actions were taken against other popular venues, including the Piper Club on Via Tagliamento.
These closures are a direct result of intensified controls by the Questura, a measure also announced nationally by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. This nationwide initiative follows the tragic incident at the Le Constellation disco in Crans Montana, Switzerland, which resulted in the deaths of 41 young people, including six Italians, and left 118 injured.
Management Disputes Claims, Cites Safety Investments
Andrea Barberis, one of the club’s partners, expressed perplexity regarding the police’s findings, stating, “I don’t believe there’s a larger or safer club in Rome than ours, with even eight emergency exits because it was a former cinema. We’ve invested heavily in safety, so much so that they didn’t contest anything from that point of view. We were surprised by the inspection methods because we believe we are in compliance.”
Barberis recounted that officers remained until 6 AM, with one reportedly counting every patron exiting the venue with a mobile phone. “Ultimately, we were cited for over-capacity. On March 2, the fire department command officially approved an expansion to 1650 people from the previous one thousand. We were expecting a visit from the Culture Department next week to ratify the fire department’s decision, which would have then updated our license with the new capacity,” he added.
Manager Details Alleged Minor Infractions
According to Barberis, operating in this sector has become increasingly difficult. “We invested 150,000 euros to install smoke extractors in case of fire; the ceilings here are 13 meters high. We were cited because two bags full of paper were behind one emergency exit, and a hostess counter, which had wheels and was therefore movable, obstructed another. As for the cleanliness of the bathrooms, they inspected them at 3:30 AM with so many people in the club.”
He further noted, “Other irregularities were contested, such as finding a fireproof Christmas tree in the cloakroom instead of the warehouse, none of which are related to safety.” The administrator of the company managing the disco has been reported. “We will appeal,” concluded the partner.
Previous Closures and City’s Response
This closure adds to a series of recent actions against Roman establishments. Earlier, the “Escopazzo” in the city center was seized due to insufficient emergency exits and the danger posed by burning coals for hookahs. Three other venues in Prati and Testaccio also faced closures due to safety deficiencies. The historic Piper Club was also shut down for exceeding capacity, precarious hygienic conditions, and evacuation risks.
The city’s authorities have indicated that these checks are part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of public venues. The manager of the Piper Club, for instance, stated that they would comply with regulations, emphasizing that customer safety is the priority, though it would take about a month to address the issues.
Impact on Rome’s Nightlife and Future Outlook
The continuous closures highlight a growing concern among city officials regarding the safety standards of entertainment venues. While these measures aim to protect patrons, they also pose challenges for club owners and the broader nightlife industry in Rome.
The recurrence of such incidents underscores the need for stringent adherence to safety protocols and capacity limits. The ongoing crackdown suggests that authorities are committed to enforcing these regulations to prevent future tragedies and ensure a secure environment for all attendees of public events.
The outcome of the judicial validation for the Opus Club’s closure and any subsequent appeals will be closely watched by both the public and the entertainment sector in Rome.
