Rome Accelerates Road Safety: 38 New Photored Cameras Arriving Soon
Rome, April 28, 2026 – Driving in Rome is about to become more closely monitored in the coming months. The city is preparing to install 38 new ‘Photored’ red light cameras, devices that automatically detect vehicles running red lights. These new systems will complement the 11 already active on some of the city’s most congested arteries, including via Cristoforo Colombo, viale Marconi, via Tuscolana, via Prenestina, viale Palmiro Togliatti, via Gregorio VII, and via Leone XIII. The operation is straightforward: once the traffic light turns red, the device activates to record any infractions.
A Strategy to Reduce Accidents
The introduction of these new systems is part of a broader road safety plan. Eugenio Patanè, the Capitoline Councillor for Mobility, emphasized this point: “The installation of Photored and Vista Red systems represents one of the pillars of our road safety strategy,” Patanè explained. “These systems serve as a fundamental deterrent not only for red light violations but, more importantly, to counteract the extremely dangerous habit of accelerating when the light turns yellow.” The most critical moment, he noted, remains the change of light: “It is in the attempt to cross the intersection at high speed on an amber light that the greatest risk of violent collisions and pedestrian accidents occurs,” Patanè stressed. “Only by reducing these behaviors can we cut down the number of serious accidents and make our roads safer.”
Where the Devices Will Be Installed
The new devices will be distributed at various strategic points across the city, selected for their high traffic volume and complex intersections. These include important junctions such as via Nomentana with viale Regina Margherita, via Cristoforo Colombo with via Laurentina, and piazzale Clodio with viale Mazzini and via Falcone e Borsellino. Areas like via Prenestina near largo Preneste and via di Portonaccio, via Casilina with viale Palmiro Togliatti, as well as intersections along via Portuense, via Appia Nuova, and circonvallazione Gianicolense, are also included. Key points such as piazza delle Cinque Giornate with ponte Matteotti and the intersection of via di Boccea, via di Torrevecchia, and via Cornelia will also receive the new cameras.
Timeline and Management of Works
The installation of the systems is in its final stages. The objective is to activate all new Photored cameras by summer, significantly expanding the control network across the city. The works are managed by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, which is responsible for the operational management of the project. The arrival of these devices aims not only to penalize but primarily to modify driver behavior. Reducing speed at intersections and respecting traffic signals remains the main goal in a city where intense traffic makes every distraction potentially dangerous.
The city’s initiative reflects a commitment to improving urban mobility and safety for all its residents and visitors. By leveraging technology, Rome hopes to create a more disciplined driving environment and ultimately save lives.
