Rome, June 9 – The Rome Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into alleged corruption and the disclosure of official secrets related to the ambitious Strait of Messina Bridge project. The probe focuses on the conduct of three individuals accused of attempting to influence the Court of Auditors’ examination of the project’s final approval.

Key Figures Under Investigation

According to a statement released by the judicial office, Carabinieri del Ros executed search warrants against three individuals. These include a former adjunct president of the Court of Auditors, who retired in February; an attorney who previously served as a board member for “Stretto di Messina Spa”; and an entrepreneur. The identities of the individuals have not been publicly disclosed at this stage of the investigation.

Allegations of Undue Influence

The investigation has documented the actions of the three suspects, which were allegedly aimed at conditioning the Court of Auditors’ legitimacy review of the final project approval for the public work. The prosecution alleges that the attorney and the entrepreneur, in an effort to sway the Court of Auditors in favor of “Stretto di Messina Spa,” approached the judicial accountant. They reportedly promised him support for future public office positions after his retirement, contingent on his active involvement in facilitating the project’s approval.

Furthermore, the accusatory framework suggests that the two also attempted to contact other magistrates deemed beneficial to the group’s interests in realizing the infrastructure project. They are also accused of revealing confidential information, obtained from the investigated Court of Auditors judge, to third parties.

The Role of the Judicial Magistrate

The judicial magistrate, for his part, allegedly offered his availability, providing continuous updates on the progress of the procedure conducted by the Court of Auditors. He is accused of revealing confidential information regarding the opinions of his fellow judicial magistrates and the development of the relevant plenary session of the Court’s Chamber of Counsel.

Evidence Seized and Future Steps

The investigation also claims that the judicial accountant examined an unfavorable decision from October 29, 2025, and committed to preparing a memorandum on the matter for “Stretto di Messina Spa” to be delivered to the company’s accountant. In return, he reportedly expressed interest in becoming president of the Antitrust Authority or a state-owned company.

During the searches conducted in Rome, the province of Reggio Calabria, and Frosinone, various electronic devices and documents were seized. These items will undergo specific evaluations and analyses to ascertain their probative value in relation to the alleged crimes.

Background of the Strait of Messina Bridge Project

The Strait of Messina Bridge is a long-standing and highly debated infrastructure project in Italy, aiming to connect Sicily with the mainland. The project has faced numerous political, environmental, and financial hurdles over the decades. The current investigation adds another layer of complexity to its realization, raising concerns about transparency and lawful processes in major public works.

Impact on Public Trust

This investigation underscores the persistent challenges in ensuring integrity in large-scale public projects. The involvement of high-ranking officials and individuals connected to the project raises questions about the oversight mechanisms and the potential for undue influence in decisions that impact national infrastructure and public funds. The outcome of this probe will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of the Strait of Messina Bridge and reinforcing public trust in governmental processes.

The Rome Prosecutor’s Office continues its work, and further developments are expected as the seized evidence is analyzed and more testimonies are gathered. The focus remains on uncovering the full extent of the alleged corrupt practices and ensuring accountability.
