Rome, January 22 – A large-scale Carabinieri operation conducted yesterday evening across Rome’s monumental areas and main railway hubs resulted in 11 arrests and 17 charges. The intervention, aimed at ensuring public safety, was carried out by various units of the Carabinieri, with a particular focus on the Colosseum area and its surroundings. Numerous young individuals were identified, drugs and bladed weapons were seized, and several individuals were apprehended for offenses ranging from drug possession to theft, evasion, and receiving stolen goods.
Extensive Operation in Rome’s Monumental Areas
Yesterday evening, an imposing control operation took place in the Colosseum area, particularly at Largo Gaetana Agnesi. Here, military personnel surrounded the area, identifying approximately thirty young people, mostly of North African origin and some already known to law enforcement. During the blitz, five young individuals were reported to the Prefect for being found in possession of modest quantities of narcotics.
Controls were extended to other central areas of the city, including the Esquilino district and Termini Station. The operations, coordinated by the Rome Centro and Rome Piazza Dante Companies, saw the collaboration of the 1st “Tuscania” Paratroopers Regiment and the Santa Maria di Galeria Canine Unit. Overall, the activity led to 11 arrests and 17 charges filed.
Arrests for Theft, Drugs, Evasion, and Resistance
In the heart of the historic center, the Carabinieri of the Rome-Piazza Venezia Command arrested an Algerian citizen caught in Via Cavour immediately after attempting to snatch a wallet from a tourist. The man, in addition to the attempted theft, was found in possession of counterfeit identification documents.
At the same time, the military from the Rome-Quirinale Station stopped a Senegalese citizen found with several doses of crack and a fake driver’s license, while the Termini Scalo Unit arrested a Gambian citizen for possession for the purpose of dealing hashish and marijuana in Via Principe Amedeo.
Regarding the control of individuals subject to restrictive measures, the Carabinieri of the Rome-Aventino Station arrested a young Italian caught outside his home in violation of his house arrest, and therefore arrested for evasion.
A precautionary custody order in prison was executed by the Carabinieri of the Rome-San Lorenzo in Lucina Station against an Italian citizen who had not complied with the imposed restrictions.
In the Esquilino area, the Rome Piazza Dante Company made six arrests: an Italian citizen for dealing cocaine, an Ivorian citizen for resisting a public official, two Georgian citizens for theft from vehicles, as well as a Somali citizen and another Italian in execution of outstanding arrest warrants.
Charges for Drugs, Theft, and Carrying Weapons
In parallel with the arrests, 17 individuals were charged in a state of freedom. In the monumental area, the Carabinieri of the Rome Piazza Venezia Command charged an Egyptian citizen for possession of hashish in Via dei Fori Imperiali.
From the Rome-Macao station, two Peruvian citizens were charged for a theft that occurred on board the “H” bus line against an Israeli tourist, and a Senegalese citizen was caught immediately after selling a dose of marijuana in Via Amendola.
The prevention activity of the Carabinieri Termini Scalo Unit led to the charge of an Afghan citizen, found in the Pettinelli underpass with a folding knife with a 9 cm blade, and a Gambian stopped in Via Giolitti with a pair of metal scissors. Both were deemed responsible for carrying weapons or objects capable of offending.
The same military personnel also charged a Senegalese citizen for receiving stolen mobile phones and seven people (two Romanian citizens, one Nigerian, one Gambian, and three Italians) for violating access bans or mandatory expulsion orders. Similarly, the Carabinieri of the Rome Piazza Dante Company charged three other citizens, respectively of Somali, Colombian, and Romanian nationality, for receiving stolen goods, resistance, and administrative violations in the Esquilino area.
The operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the Carabinieri to maintain public order and safety in Rome, particularly in areas frequented by tourists and commuters. The focus on drug dealing, theft, and illegal weapons demonstrates a comprehensive approach to combating various forms of crime that affect the city’s security and reputation.
Further investigations are expected to follow, as authorities continue to monitor and address criminal activities in the Italian capital.
