‘Fencing for All’ Project Begins in Rome: A Cultural Challenge for Inclusion
Rome, March 28, 2026 – The journey of inclusive fencing on the world stage has officially begun in Rome. The international round table “Fencing for All,” organized by the Italian Fencing Federation (Federscherma) in collaboration with the International Fencing Federation (FIE), inaugurated a new path of social integration, building on Italy’s pioneering efforts.
The event saw the participation of numerous speakers, including Federal President Luigi Mazzone, FIE Secretary General Gulnora Saidova, and European Confederation President Pascal Tesch. The discussions were opened by Diego Nepi Molineris, CEO of Sport e Salute.
Sport as a Tool for Social Integration
“It is a great pleasure to be here to celebrate such a beautiful, innovative, and inclusive project,” said Nepi. “This initiative is a concrete example of the values that guide Italian fencing and the extraordinary potential of sport as an educational and social tool. Sport e Salute will always support such initiatives, convinced that every child and young person should have access to sporting experiences that enhance their abilities.”
President Mazzone expressed his pride in the project’s international recognition. “I am proud to see how a project conceived and desired by the Federation is drawing the attention of the global fencing family,” Mazzone stated. “Fencing is a formidable vehicle for social inclusion, and the success of the first stage of ‘Fencing for All,’ held at the Giulio Onesti Olympic Preparation Centre in Rome, demonstrates how an idea has become a circuit of competition and integration of extraordinary value.”
A Unique Competition for Inclusion
This project represents a significant cultural challenge, realized through a special competition: a mixed team epee event where neurotypical and autistic athletes or those with intellectual disabilities compete together. The initial stage saw the participation of 15 clubs from across Italy, setting the stage for the final scheduled for May 17 in Milan.
The ultimate goal, taking shape thanks to the FIE and representatives of national federations, is to transform this competition into a major international event next year.
Future Prospects and International Expansion
The success of “Fencing for All” in Rome underscores the growing commitment to making sports accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities. This initiative not only promotes physical activity but also fosters a sense of community and belonging among participants. The project’s expansion to an international level is expected to further inspire and encourage inclusive practices within the global fencing community.
The organizers anticipate that this pioneering effort will serve as a model for other sports, demonstrating how dedication and collaboration can break down barriers and create opportunities for all.
