International Women’s Day 2026 in Rome: A Guide to Over 100 Events
Rome is gearing up for a vibrant International Women’s Day 2026, transforming March 8th into an extended period of reflection and celebration with over a hundred events. This year’s theme, “March 8th Always,” aims to go beyond a single day, fostering a widespread discussion on gender equity, labor, and inclusion.
Free Access to Culture and Special Initiatives
On March 8th, women will enjoy free entry to state museums, archaeological parks, and monumental complexes, including castles, villas, and historic gardens. Numerous cultural venues will host guided tours and themed initiatives:
- MAXXI Museum: Special discounts on myMAXXI cards for women.
- Industrie Fluviali (Ostiense): The Unique Market returns with contemporary craftsmanship and design from over 50 exhibitors.
- Public Libraries: A long program of editorial presentations and reviews until April 1st, exploring the lives of influential female figures.
Outdoor Activities and Trekking
For those who prefer the outdoors, the Botanical Garden will host “La Flor – Natura al femminile” for the second year. This event combines music, culture, and discussion to reflect on women’s achievements and aspirations.
Urban trekking enthusiasts can join a 14-kilometer tour of the historic center, tracing the footsteps of Roman matrons, saints, partisans, and writers. The meeting point is at 9:45 AM at the Colosseo metro station (Line B).
Protests and Solidarity
International Women’s Day in Rome also serves as a platform for advocacy and protest. The “Non una di meno” collective will organize a march starting from Circo Massimo at 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 8th, followed by a transfeminist strike on Monday, March 9th, against the Bongiorno bill, bringing the issue of consent back into public debate.
In a gesture of solidarity, Assopace Palestina and the Pangea Foundation have announced a series of tours on March 8th, organized by the “Guides for Gaza.” Proceeds from these tours will support the Center for Legal Research, Counseling, and Protection of Women (CWLRCP) in Gaza. Four visits are scheduled:
- Morning: Ara Pacis and a walk on the theme “The Women of the Renaissance.”
- Afternoon: Capitoline Picture Gallery, Aurelian Walls with the Tomb of the Scipios, and Garbatella.
A Message of Global Solidarity
Monica Lucarelli, Councilor for Productive Activities, Equal Opportunities, and Investment Attraction, highlighted the importance of recognizing structural inequalities. “Talking about gender equity today means recognizing that inequalities are structural: they cut across work, access to opportunities, security, representation, and freedom of choice,” she stated. “Our thoughts go to Iranian women, who continue to fight for freedom and today bear the brunt of a war that affects the civilian population above all. Their courage reminds us that the battle for women’s self-determination is global.”
This year’s extensive program ensures that March 8th in Rome is not just a passing celebration but a collective commitment to gender equality and women’s rights.
