Rome Invests 30 Million Euros in Municipal Roads: A Comprehensive Plan Valued at 100 Million
Rome, March 15, 2026 – The Roman Capitoline Junta has approved a significant economic intervention to address the city’s deteriorating urban road network. A total of 30 million euros has been specifically allocated for the repair and maintenance of roads managed by the city’s municipalities, which have suffered extensive damage due to heavy rainfall in recent months. This investment is a crucial component of a broader, 100 million euro plan designed to enhance the overall road infrastructure across the capital.
Interventions Following Weather Damage
Over the past few months, adverse weather conditions have severely impacted the asphalt in various districts of Rome. Frequent precipitation has exacerbated existing problems, leading to the proliferation of potholes and significant deterioration of road surfaces. The newly approved investment aims to tackle these critical situations within the municipalities, where extraordinary maintenance work will be scheduled to improve road safety and traffic flow.
The Role of Municipalities in Road Selection
Municipal administrations will play a pivotal role in prioritizing these interventions. Each municipality will be responsible for identifying the roads within its territory that require the most urgent attention. These new funds will supplement existing resources already available for local road maintenance, with additional financing earmarked for both extraordinary and routine upkeep. This process is expected to enable targeted interventions in areas where road conditions are most compromised.
Resources Also for Major Road Networks
In parallel with the interventions on municipal roads, a substantial portion of the funding will also be directed towards the city’s main arterial roads. The comprehensive plan includes further resources to complete the requalification work on what is known as the ‘grande viabilità’ (major road network). In recent years, the administration has already initiated an extensive program to resurface the capital’s main roads, affecting numerous heavily trafficked sections.
According to Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, this new allocation will strengthen this ongoing effort: “The heavy rains of recent months have highlighted the urgent need to accelerate interventions, particularly on municipal roads. With this extraordinary plan, we will be able to intervene in the city’s districts and make mobility safer.”
Faster Construction Thanks to Framework Agreements
The planned interventions will be executed through existing framework agreements managed by the Public Works Department of Roma Capitale. This administrative tool allows for the rapid initiation of construction sites. Ornella Segnalini, the Councillor for Public Works, emphasized that this approach enables quick activation of operations on the ground: “The objective is to start the works planned with the municipalities as soon as possible and to intervene more effectively on the road network.”
With this new investment, the Capitoline administration aims to improve road conditions and reduce inconvenience for citizens and motorists alike, addressing both major thoroughfares and local district roads.
