Major Anti-Mafia Blitz in Rome: 18 Arrested, Clan Feud Averted

Rome, May 7, 2026 – An extensive anti-mafia operation by the Carabinieri, launched at dawn yesterday, led to the arrest of 18 individuals associated with a dangerous criminal organization based in the Tuscolano area. The group, operating with methods typical of the mafia and having close ties to prominent figures of the Senese clan, faced charges ranging from international drug trafficking to attempted murder. The swift intervention by law enforcement also successfully thwarted a potential clan feud.

The Dawn Raid and Charges

The operation saw Carabinieri helicopters and special units deployed at first light. The 18 arrested individuals (16 detained in prison, 2 under house arrest) are accused of various crimes, including association aimed at illicit drug trafficking, drug dealing, illegal possession of firearms, kidnapping for extortion, money laundering, extortion, and attempted murder. Several of these charges are aggravated by the use of mafia methods.

The investigations, initiated in May 2025 by the Carabinieri’s investigative unit in Rome and coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, uncovered a sophisticated criminal network. This organization was responsible for importing large quantities of narcotics from abroad and distributing them wholesale to various drug dealing hubs across the capital.

Mafia Methods and Senese Clan Connections

This criminal association, considered one of the most dangerous in Rome, was characterized by its availability of weapons and its use of “mafia methods.” This included exercising territorial control over drug dealing activities, employing violent and threatening tactics to recover drug debts, and maintaining close ties between its leaders and influential members of the Senese clan.

Violent Operations and Extortion

Investigators documented the organization’s violent modus operandi through several key incidents. One such event involved the kidnapping of an intermediary’s father, who was abducted in Sulmona (L’Aquila) and taken to a house on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio. There, a pistol was pointed at his head, forcing him to send messages to his son to demand the return of 200,000 euros, money intended for hashish that the son had stolen from the organization.

Another case involved the extortion of a Moroccan intermediary based in Spain. He was threatened with death to compel him to return 50,000 euros, an advance payment for a drug shipment that never reached Italy. Furthermore, an insolvent pusher was brutally beaten with kicks, punches, and a pistol butt to the head in a church, to force him to hand over 35,000 euros.

Averted Clan Feud and Hired Hitman

During the investigations, conflicts arose over the division of drug dealing territories with a rival gang. These clashes culminated in two attempted murders, whose organizational and execution phases were meticulously reconstructed. These incidents occurred in the Tuscolano district on November 23 and December 11, 2025. During these ambushes, multiple gunshots were fired in public, injuring two members of the rival factions and posing a serious risk to passersby. The ongoing feud between the two groups continued in the following months, and the Carabinieri successfully thwarted at least five further assassination attempts between April 14 and April 19, 2026.

To carry out these crimes and avoid identification, the organization’s leaders even hired a Chilean hitman. He was brought directly from Spain and hidden, along with other members of the commando, in a villa in Ciampino.

Prison System Permeability and Internal Influence

The investigation also revealed an alarming general situation regarding the permeability of the prison system, particularly concerning the Rebibbia prison in Rome. The organization maintained constant contact with several high-profile criminal figures currently incarcerated at Rebibbia. Intercepted communications further indicated the group’s ability to influence inmate assignments within the prison and to commission punitive expeditions against inmates with whom they had criminal disputes.

Additional Arrests and Discoveries

In addition to the initial 18 arrests, six more individuals were apprehended during the morning’s operational phases, bringing the total to 24. During the execution of the arrest warrants, Carabinieri from the GIS and the investigative unit of Rome raided a villa on Via del Fontanile Anagnino, bordering Ciampino. Inside, they found two dangerous suspects, who were already subjects of arrest warrants, along with four other men. The Chilean hitman, hired by the organization and brought from Spain, was also found hidden in the Morena villa. All six men, including those already targeted by warrants, were arrested in flagrante delicto for possession of narcotics for the purpose of dealing.

This operation marks a significant blow to organized crime in Rome, demonstrating the Carabinieri’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and maintaining public safety.
