Rome, February 10, 2026 – The ‘Sea Park’ project in Ostia is moving forward with the official presentation of its regeneration plan yesterday. The public meeting, hosted at the Sea Engineering department of Roma Tre University, outlined the ambitious transformation of Rome’s coastline. Attendees included Maurizio Veloccia, Rome’s Councillor for Urban Planning; Roberta Angelilli, Vice President and Councillor for Economic Development of the Lazio Region; Mario Falconi, President of the X Municipality; and Giovanni Paris, Head of the Special Office for Intervention Coordination.

Public Engagement and Thematic Discussions

Prior to the official presentation, three thematic working groups – focusing on environment, mobility, and local development – were held on Monday afternoon, February 9. These sessions facilitated discussions with technicians, associations, and local economic operators, ensuring broad engagement in the project’s development.

A Landscape Infrastructure for Coastal Regeneration

Designed by the Abacus studio on behalf of Risorse per Roma, the project aims to transform the coastline into an integrated, ecological, and accessible infrastructure. Key interventions include the requalification of Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi and Toscanelli, the redevelopment of Piazza dei Ravennati, the creation of the ‘Dune Park’, a new vehicular bridge over the Canale dei Pescatori, traffic reorganization, improved connections with train stations, and the establishment of new parking facilities.

Key Figures and Urban Transformation Goals

The plan encompasses the requalification of approximately 7.4 kilometers of seafront, the creation of 9.5 kilometers of new pedestrian paths, and 15 equipped public squares. The ‘Dune Park’, located between Piazzale Magellano and Piazza Cristoforo Colombo, will involve the reconstruction of the marine dune and the enhancement of existing green areas, offering public pedestrian and cycle spaces directly adjacent to the beach.

This extensive intervention is projected to reduce asphalted surfaces by 55 percent, depaving over 150,000 square meters. Green areas will see a 150 percent increase, with over 2,000 new plantings introduced. Improvements to road surfaces, lighting, and urban furniture are also planned to enhance the overall usability of the promenade.

The ‘Dolia’ Concept and New Public Spaces

At the heart of the ‘Dune Park’ will be the ‘Dolia’, a flexible design element intended to host rest areas, water features, sports activities, kiosks, and recreational spaces. The objective is to create community hubs that enhance the coastal landscape and encourage new ways of utilizing public spaces.

Funding, Timelines, and Territorial Strategy

This project marks the initial phase of the broader Ostia Lido territorial strategy, funded through the regional FESR 2021-2027 Program with over 23.8 million euros from the Lazio Region. An additional 30 million euros has been allocated by Roma Capitale, bringing the total investment to over 50 million euros. Seventy percent of the interventions are slated to be tendered by June 2026, with the entire requalification project targeted for completion by 2028.

Institutional Statements on the Project

Councillor Veloccia stated, “The new Sea Park is getting closer and represents a historic revolution for Rome’s sea,” highlighting the inclusion of new trees, extensive green areas, and a depaving of over 50 percent of asphalted surfaces. He added that the project already has a feasibility study and comprehensive funding of 50 million euros, with construction expected to commence in 2026.

Roberta Angelilli emphasized that the project must be integrated into a broad strategic vision focused on quality of life and the economic and tourist revival of the area. This vision, she noted, will be achieved through a participatory process involving citizens, associations, and operators. Identified priorities include parking solutions, accessibility to the sea and pine forest, cultural and sports development, and a program of events to enhance the tourist appeal of Ostia and the Roman coastline.
