Obey’s “Third Eye Open Peace” Mural Transforms Naples Urban Landscape
Naples, May 6, 2026 – Shepard Fairey, globally recognized as Obey, one of the most influential figures in the world of Street Art, has chosen Naples as the canvas for his latest significant work. The mural, titled “Third Eye Open Peace,” was unveiled yesterday in the Ponticelli district, specifically at Via Carlo Miranda 15, and spans the entire facade of a building, offering a powerful message to the city.
A Gift to the City: Peace, Awareness, and Responsibility
The artwork is presented as a gift to Naples, articulating a complex message that intertwines peace, awareness, and individual responsibility. In a historical period marked by global conflicts and tensions, the mural serves as an invitation to reflect not only on the necessity of peace but also on the inner conditions that make it attainable.
Gaetano Manfredi, the Mayor of Naples, commented on the significance of the project: “Naples has once again been chosen by a world-renowned artist for the creation of a work with profound symbolic value, a majestic Street Art project that sends a strong message of peace and awareness. An imposing mural that stands on the facade of a building in Ponticelli, testifying to the city’s ability to welcome and enhance international projects.”
He added, “In particular, East Naples needs beauty to see and tell, places of sociality and development that arise from the territory. All this increasingly confirms Naples as a reference point for contemporary art, chosen and experienced by great artists as a place of inspiration and production. In this context, works like this contribute to strengthening the link between territory and art, community and universal values.”
Symbolism in “Third Eye Open Peace”
The centerpiece of the composition is a frontal, hieratic, and universal female face, framed by floral elements that symbolize growth and transformation. Above the figure, the word “PACE” (Peace) stands as a direct declaration, while rays radiating in the background amplify the symbolic dimension of the image, evoking openness and enlightenment.
The visual and conceptual core of the work is the third eye, integrated with the peace symbol and centrally placed. This element represents dialogue with one’s inner self, higher consciousness, and the search for balance between individual and collective dimensions. Through a highly symmetrical structure and an immediately recognizable visual language, Fairey constructs an image that invites viewers not only to observe the world but also to look within themselves.
In this sense, “Third Eye Open Peace” transcends the dimension of a direct political message to become a deeper invitation: to develop awareness, empathy, and connection as tools for building real and lasting peace.
Artist’s Perspective: “Make Art Not War” Revisited
Shepard Fairey himself explained the inspiration behind the mural: “This mural titled ‘Third Eye Open Peace’ in Naples incorporates a portrait that I originally created for my ‘Make Art Not War’ print at the time of the Iraq War. The mural is a public artwork complementary to my exhibition ‘Power To the Peaceful’ which will open at the Gallerie d’Italia Naples on May 6.”
He further elaborated, “I have long promoted peace through my art and activism, and this mural incorporates a peace sign and the text PEACE, also including a third eye that blooms like a flower. The third eye represents a dialogue with one’s inner self, a higher consciousness, and a search for enlightenment, all essential elements for achieving peace and harmony. I have often used the phrase ‘open eyes – open mind’ and I think ‘third eye open’ is a similar but slightly more poignant idea because it addresses looking not only outward to observe, but also inward. If we can connect with our own humanity, we can feel empathy for others.”
Urban Transformation and Community Engagement
Located in the eastern part of Naples, the mural engages with the urban context, transforming a public housing building into a symbolic and participatory surface capable of activating reflection and belonging. This project, actively supported by the Municipality of Naples, was promoted and organized by Wunderkammern, a contemporary art gallery part of Deodato Group, which has been developing projects dedicated to urban languages and the relationship between art and public space for years.
The operational and logistical coordination of the intervention was handled by Arteteca / INWARD Osservatorio Nazionale sulla Creatività Urbana, which facilitated dialogue among the artist, institutions, the territory, and the local community.
The creation of the work coincides with Shepard Fairey’s presence in Naples for the exhibition “OBEY: Power to the Peaceful,” which opens on May 6 at the Gallerie d’Italia, curated by Giuseppe Pizzuto. Special thanks were extended to the sponsors who supported the project – La Reggia Designer Outlet, Poltrona Frau, and Montana Colors – whose contributions made this significant urban art piece possible.
With “Third Eye Open Peace,” Naples gains a new artistic landmark of international relevance, capable of speaking to citizens and visitors alike, and confirming the role of Street Art as a tool for transformation, awareness, and connection among communities.
