Milanese Residents Flood ARPA with Environmental Complaints
Milan, April 14 – Residents of Milan and its hinterland are increasingly vocal about environmental nuisances, with the regional environmental protection agency (ARPA Lombardia) reporting a surge in complaints. In 2025 alone, the Milanese Urp office of ARPA Lombardia processed 1,449 cases related to noise, foul odors, and electromagnetic fields, marking a significant increase in public engagement on environmental issues.
The data reveals that Milan and its surrounding areas are the epicenter of these concerns, accounting for the highest number of requests submitted to the public relations office. A total of 626 complaints were lodged via the web, while 823 were made through telephone calls, indicating a broad reach of public dissatisfaction.
Noise, Odors, and EMFs: The Top Environmental Concerns
A detailed breakdown of the complaints highlights that noise pollution is the most prevalent issue, constituting 29% of all requests. Following closely are unpleasant odors, which account for 17% of the reports, and electromagnetic fields, representing 9% of the total. These figures underscore the specific challenges faced by a high-density urban environment such as Milan, where such issues can significantly impact the quality of life for its inhabitants.
On a regional level, ARPA’s Urp office managed 1,646 written requests, 2,357 telephone calls, and 801 emails. The statistics show a substantial 40% increase in written inquiries compared to the previous year, while telephone calls experienced a slight decrease of 4%. Across Lombardy, the most frequently reported environmental concerns remain unpleasant odors (22%), noise (18%), and electromagnetic fields (6%).
Swift Responses and Commitment to Transparency
ARPA Lombardia has demonstrated a commitment to addressing these concerns promptly. The average response time for written requests was approximately 9 days, significantly faster than the 30-day period stipulated by regulations. Annarita Azzarone, head of the Press Office, Corporate Communication, and Urp unit, emphasized the agency’s dedication to efficiency and transparency.
“Our Public Relations Office has implemented a significant reduction in waiting times, providing pertinent and satisfactory responses,” stated Azzarone. “All of this is in line with two basic principles: efficiency and transparency, fundamental pillars that are fully reflected in our Constitutional Charter.” She further added that these achievements are a result of strong internal collaboration across all agency structures, which is essential for providing clear, timely, and comprehensive explanations to meet the needs of citizens, families, and businesses, all while adhering to rigorous scientific standards. “The correct management of information is conducive to concrete environmental protection,” Azzarone concluded.
What’s Next for Environmental Monitoring in Milan?
The continuous influx of environmental complaints underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring and proactive measures to mitigate these issues in Milan. ARPA Lombardia’s efficient response system and commitment to transparency are crucial in building public trust and ensuring a healthier urban environment for all residents. The agency’s ability to quickly process and respond to these concerns will be vital in addressing the evolving environmental challenges of the metropolitan area.
The increase in complaints also suggests a heightened environmental awareness among the Milanese population, prompting both citizens and authorities to work together towards sustainable urban living. Further initiatives and public engagement campaigns may be necessary to tackle the root causes of these persistent environmental nuisances and to foster a more harmonious coexistence between urban development and environmental protection.
