A 43-year-old man, already known to law enforcement, was apprehended in Rome as he attempted to steal keys and packages from a building on Via Appia. His objective was to gain access to the hospitality structures within the edifice. The prompt intervention was facilitated by a resident’s alert, enabling officers to catch the thief in the act and thwart his criminal enterprise.

The Report and Police Intervention

According to information released by the State Police, the incident unfolded in the dead of night when a resident of a building on Via Appia was awakened by suspicious noises emanating from the entrance. Looking out her window, the woman observed a man forcefully tampering with key lock boxes installed outside the building, which are used to store keys for guests of the hospitality facilities.

A swift call to the 112 emergency number allowed officers from the Trastevere and Celio Police Stations to respond rapidly. Upon arrival, police found the suspect loitering between the building’s entrance and its outbuildings, carrying a trolley, a backpack, several bags, and numerous packages. The man was also equipped with a complete set of burglary tools, including wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and other instruments used for forcing locks and security devices.

Suspect’s Profile and Theft Dynamics

The arrested man is a 43-year-old Roman, with a history of similar offenses. Investigators determined that his target was the key lock boxes outside the building, which contained keys to rooms and apartments used for hospitality. Taking advantage of the night and the sparse presence of people, the suspect allegedly forced open the key boxes to obtain the keys and then gain undisturbed access to various residential units and service areas of the building.

During the search, officers found twenty keys marked with different identification tags inside one of the man’s bags. These keys were confirmed to belong to rooms and apartments within the building’s hospitality structures. The building’s doorman was instrumental in confirming the disappearance of numerous keys stored in the key lock boxes and several packages received on behalf of residents.

Stolen Goods and Subsequent Investigations

Further investigations revealed a broader scope of the criminal activity. With the recently stolen keys, the thief had managed to access multiple residential units and several service areas, making off with a designer bag, a tablet, a mobile phone, credit cards, and a wallet. All stolen items were immediately confiscated by officers and made available to their rightful owners for restitution.

The State Police’s intervention successfully halted a full-blown night raid and brought a professional thief to justice. Just days prior, he had been served with a precautionary measure prohibiting him from residing in the Municipality of Rome, issued by the Judicial Authority following a previous arrest.

Charges and the Arrested Individual’s Status

The man is now seriously implicated in the crime of theft. The Judicial Authority has validated the State Police’s actions, recognizing the correctness of the procedures followed by the officers and the soundness of the evidence gathered against the suspect.
