Milan to Unveil New Luxury Hotel ‘Residenza del Cardinale’ in Historic 13th-Century Palace

Milan, a city constantly at the forefront of European trends, is preparing for a significant addition to its luxury hospitality scene. In spring 2026, the Residenza del Cardinale, Meliá Collection, a new five-star luxury hotel, is slated to open its doors. This highly anticipated establishment will be situated in a meticulously restored 13th-century palace, formerly owned by the Fumagalli family, located on Via Cardinal Federico, just a stone’s throw from the prestigious Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

The project, currently undergoing extensive restoration with an investment totaling 20 million euros, aims to blend the historical grandeur of the building with contemporary luxury. Upon completion, the Residenza del Cardinale will become the second Meliá Collection hotel in Italy, following the Tenuta di Artimino in Tuscany. Meliá Collection, a brand under the Spanish-origin Meliá Hotel International group-one of the largest hotel chains globally-is dedicated to properties that exude charm and possess a unique historical character.

Exclusive Suites and a Unique Dining Experience

The new hotel will feature 28 exclusive suites, including three penthouses, each boasting a private terrace. The design concept for these accommodations focuses on harmonizing the palace’s historical elements with the sophisticated, modern luxury expected of a five-star establishment. This opening follows the successful launch of Palazzo Cordusio Grand Meliá between late 2023 and early 2024, signaling the Meliá group’s robust expansion in Europe and beyond.

While Palazzo Cordusio offers a diverse array of gastronomic outlets, the Residenza del Cardinale will concentrate on a singular, high-end culinary offering. The hotel’s restaurant is poised to become a destination for fine dining, with its culinary direction overseen by the esteemed Chef Carlo Zarri.

Olympic Chef Carlo Zarri to Lead Culinary Vision

Chef Carlo Zarri, a prominent interpreter of Piedmontese cuisine and a celebrated ambassador of Italian gastronomy abroad, particularly in the United States and Canada, will be at the helm of the hotel’s culinary operations. Born in 1965, Zarri has managed the Villa San Carlo hotel restaurant in Cortemilia, Alta Langa, Cuneo, with his wife Paola for over four decades. His cuisine is renowned for its focus on the rich, local produce of the region, including the famous Piedmontese hazelnut.

Beyond his acclaimed restaurant, Chef Zarri is widely recognized for his consistent presence at the Olympic Games. He has cooked for Italian athletes and staff at five different Olympic editions: Salt Lake City 2002, Athens 2004 (Summer Olympics), Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010, and Beijing 2022. He is also slated to manage the catering for the upcoming Milano-Cortina 2026 Games, where he is responsible for preparing over three million meals during the Olympic period. His involvement with the Residenza del Cardinale will add another significant commitment to his busy 2026 schedule.

The hotel’s restaurant and bar facilities will include both indoor and outdoor seating, with the latter overlooking the palace’s charming cloister. This outdoor area will be accessible to the public, offering a unique dining experience in a historically rich setting.

Meliá’s Continued Expansion in Milan

The opening of Residenza del Cardinale underscores Meliá Hotel International’s strategic growth in Milan, a city that continues to attract significant investment in its hospitality sector. The new hotel promises to deliver a high standard of hospitality and services within a more intimate setting compared to its larger counterparts, catering to discerning travelers seeking a blend of historical ambiance and modern luxury.

The project highlights Milan’s enduring appeal as a prime destination for both business and leisure, with its dynamic cultural scene and growing reputation as a European hub. The integration of a renowned chef like Carlo Zarri further elevates the city’s culinary landscape, promising an exceptional gastronomic experience for both hotel guests and local patrons.

The Residenza del Cardinale is set to become a landmark in Milan’s luxury hotel market, offering a unique blend of heritage, elegance, and world-class dining, further solidifying the city’s position as a premier global destination.
