Naples to Dedicate a Street to Giorgio Ascarelli, First President of SSC Napoli
Naples, January 14 – The Naples City Council has unanimously approved the resolution to name a street after Giorgio Ascarelli, the Neapolitan entrepreneur who served as the first president of SSC Napoli from its founding in August 1926. The proposal, put forward by Deputy Mayor Laura Lieto, received full support in recent days.
A Tribute in Ponticelli, the Heart of Napoli’s Early History
The new street, to be named Via Giorgio Ascarelli, will be located in the Ponticelli district. This area holds significant historical importance for the club, as it was here that Ascarelli oversaw the construction of the new stadium intended to host the Azzurri’s home matches. Inaugurated in 1930 in Rione Luzzatti, this stadium was tragically destroyed by bombings during World War II.
The specific location for the new street will be in the circulation area between Via Gianturco and Via Gaetano Bruno. This initiative is pending authorization from the Prefect of Naples.
Who Was Giorgio Ascarelli?
Giorgio Ascarelli was a prominent Neapolitan entrepreneur of Jewish origin. His vision and dedication were instrumental in the establishment of SSC Napoli. As the club’s first president, he laid the foundations for what would become one of Italy’s most beloved football teams. His commitment extended beyond mere administration, as evidenced by his personal investment in the club’s infrastructure, including the construction of its first dedicated stadium.
Significance of the Tribute
This decision by the Naples City Council is seen as a fitting homage to a pivotal figure in the city’s sporting history. It acknowledges Ascarelli’s profound impact on the development of football in Naples and his lasting legacy, which continues to resonate with fans and the community. The naming of a street in his honor ensures that his contributions will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come, particularly in the very district where his pioneering efforts for the club took root.
The initiative underscores the city’s commitment to preserving its historical memory and recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to its cultural and sporting identity. The new street will serve as a permanent reminder of Ascarelli’s vision and his enduring connection to the heart of Neapolitan football.
The formal inauguration of Via Giorgio Ascarelli will take place following the necessary administrative approvals from the Prefect of Naples.
