Naples Prefect: Time Will Not Erase Memory of Francesco Pio Maimone

Naples, March 20 – The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, attended a commemoration event today for Francesco Pio Maimone, a young man who was tragically killed three years ago. The event took place in Mergellina, where Maimone was shot by a stray bullet on the evening of March 20, 2023. He was 18 years old and worked as a pizzaiolo.

Addressing the attendees, Prefect Di Bari stated, “These are moments in which every word carries weight. These are moments in which the sense of community must be recovered. Even grief must be shared.” He underscored the commitment of institutions, saying, “The institutions are here because that pain must be experienced and understood to say that what happened must not be forgotten.”

A Life Cut Short, a Future Denied

Francesco Pio, according to the Prefect, had “hope and a future,” and his untimely death halted his journey and that of his family, who he could have brought much satisfaction to. Di Bari reiterated, “We are here and we will be here, and time will never erase what happened, and we are called to build a community around this family.” He added that “each of us has a piece of responsibility that we must always exercise.”

The Prefect also acknowledged the work of the police forces but warned that “the good of life must never be neglected.”

The Tragic Incident

Francesco Pio Maimone was killed by a stray bullet fired by another young man during an altercation over a dirty shoe. The incident shocked the community and highlighted the issue of urban violence.

Community and Institutional Support

The commemoration, held three years after the tragic event, saw a significant turnout in Mergellina. The presence of the Prefect of Naples signifies the institutional recognition of the pain and the ongoing commitment to address such issues and support affected families. The emphasis on shared grief and collective responsibility aims to foster a stronger sense of community and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The authorities continue to work towards ensuring justice and promoting a culture of legality and respect for life within the community. The memory of Francesco Pio Maimone serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the importance of continuous efforts to build a safer society.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from both the community and the institutions to keep Francesco Pio’s memory alive and to work towards a future where such tragedies are averted.
