Naples, May 3 – On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Unitary Union of Journalists of Campania (Sugc) commemorated two figures central to the fight for journalistic integrity and freedom. Banners were displayed on the balcony of their headquarters in Naples, honoring Giancarlo Siani, assassinated forty years ago, and Mario Paciolla, a Neapolitan co-worker whose death in South America remains shrouded in mystery.
A Concrete Defense of Press Freedom
Geppina Landolfo, regional secretary, emphasized the significance of remembering Siani and Paciolla. “Remembering Giancarlo Siani and Mario Paciolla means reaffirming every day that press freedom is not an abstract principle, but a right that must be defended concretely, also by providing all necessary protections for those who provide information,” Landolfo stated.
She further stressed the need to ensure maximum attention to colleagues exposed to risks, citing Mimmo Rubio as an example, to ensure that “no one is left alone.” Rubio, a journalist under police escort, recently had his protection revoked despite ongoing legal proceedings related to threats and attacks he has suffered.
Participants and Concerns
The initiative saw the participation of several key figures, including Landolfo, Claudio Silvestri, deputy general secretary of the National Federation of the Italian Press (Fnsi), and members of the regional union’s executive board. Mimmo Rubio himself was present, highlighting the immediate and personal relevance of the issues discussed.
The event underscored the precarious situation faced by journalists who report on sensitive topics, particularly in regions where organized crime and corruption are prevalent. The call for greater protection and support for journalists is a recurring theme in Italy, a country where several journalists have been targeted for their work.
The Legacy of Siani and Paciolla
Giancarlo Siani was a journalist for Il Mattino who was murdered by the Camorra in 1985 for his investigative reporting on organized crime. His death remains a symbol of the dangers faced by journalists who challenge powerful criminal organizations.
Mario Paciolla, a UN collaborator, was found dead in Colombia in 2020. The circumstances surrounding his death have led to calls for a thorough and transparent investigation, with many suspecting foul play related to his work.
