Naples City Council Proposes Attendance Fee for Sannazaro Theater Reconstruction

Naples, February 25, 2026 – The Naples City Council has put forward a proposal to donate the attendance fee from a recent session towards the reconstruction of the Sannazaro Theater. The theater was extensively damaged by a fire on the morning of February 17, prompting immediate investigations and a wave of support from local authorities.

Investigation into the Fire Continues

The forensic investigation ordered by the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office, part of the VI section of the inquiring office (Deputy Prosecutor Mario Canale, Assistant Prosecutor Antonio Ricci), will commence following the securing of the area. The inquiry aims to ascertain the causes of the fire, which also affected several nearby homes in the Chiaia district. The current hypothesis is accidental fire, and the affected area remains under strict control by law enforcement.

During the initial firefighting efforts, two firefighters sustained injuries, fortunately not critical. A portion of the theater’s materials will be collected and stored for further examination by consultants assisting with the investigation.

Urgent Measures Revoked After Air Quality Monitoring

Following the initial results of air quality monitoring conducted after the fire, Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi revoked the ordinance issued on February 17. This ordinance had introduced urgent measures to protect public health in the Chiaia district. A report from the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Campania confirmed that micro-pollutant levels attributable to the fire were below reference parameters, indicating no immediate health risks.

Symbolic Gesture for Reconstruction Efforts

City Council member Walter Savarese D’Atri proposed the allocation of the attendance fee, stating, “It is a symbolic gesture, certainly not a definitive solution, but I believe it can be a starting point, knowing that local and national institutions have also committed to rebuilding the theater.” This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to restoring the cultural landmark.

Community and Institutional Support for Sannazaro Theater

The Sannazaro Theater, a significant cultural institution in Naples, has garnered widespread support for its reconstruction. While the City Council’s proposal is a symbolic first step, it highlights the collective desire to see the theater restored. The incident has brought to the forefront the importance of cultural heritage and the community’s resolve to preserve it.

Further details regarding the reconstruction timeline and additional funding initiatives are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and institutional commitments materialize. The community awaits the full restoration of the Sannazaro Theater, a beacon of Neapolitan culture.
