Mayor Manfredi Joins Festivities, Highlights Growing Ties
The inauguration of the festivities was marked by the presence of Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, who actively participated in the cultural gazebo activities. A symbolic moment occurred when Mayor Manfredi, alongside Guo Lin, the Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Italy, painted the eyes of two lions. In Chinese culture, this ‘eye-painting’ ritual symbolizes awakening and bestows blessings.
Mayor Manfredi emphasized the strengthening bond between the two communities. “The relationship between the Neapolitan and Chinese people is growing and improving steadily, and we will do everything to strengthen this bond. There is a grand investment program to make the Business Centre an increasingly central area in our city’s policy,” he stated.
A Bridge of Culture and Friendship
Valerio Cai Zhu, secretary of the Chinese Merchants of Naples and the South, highlighted the broader significance of the event. “Celebrating the Chinese New Year in Naples means building a cultural bridge, capable of fostering mutual understanding and friendship between different civilizations through dialogue and exchange,” he remarked.
The celebrations commenced with the traditional dragon and lion dance in Piazza Salerno, set against the backdrop of skyscrapers and red Chinese lanterns, creating a striking visual spectacle.
Two Days of Immersion in Chinese Tradition
The festivities, which continue into tomorrow from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, offer a rich program of events designed to immerse attendees in Chinese culture. These include martial arts demonstrations, Taiji performances, cultural workshops, and a diverse array of street food, alongside typical traditional Chinese dishes.
This year marks the Year of the Horse. The galloping horse is a symbol of progress, cooperation, and openness, and on this occasion, it also represents the continuous strengthening of friendship between China and Italy.
