ROME, February 13 – Municipio VIII has launched a series of targeted interventions in the Tor Marancia district, soon to extend to Roma 70, aimed at improving daily life for residents by enhancing safety and inclusivity. The project focuses on removing architectural barriers in three specific areas: Piazza Lorenzo Lotto and Piazza Lante in Tor Marancia, and Via dei Granai di Nerva in Roma 70. This comprehensive investment, totaling nearly 245,000 euros, prioritizes pedestrians, people with disabilities, the elderly, and cyclists.
Detailed Interventions for Improved Accessibility
The first phase of the project addresses Piazza Lorenzo Lotto, where several critical issues were identified. The main access point lacked a sidewalk, the existing pavement was damaged by tree roots, and both lighting and horizontal signage were inadequate. Additionally, the absence of ramps at some crossings presented a significant obstacle for individuals with mobility challenges. The planned structural interventions include the reconstruction of sidewalks, the creation of a new pedestrian area, and the installation of ramps, bollards, and tactile pathways designed for the visually impaired.
Following Piazza Lotto, work will commence in Piazza Lante, also in Tor Marancia. Here, the objective is to repair sidewalks and road curbs, clarify horizontal signage-especially for reserved parking-and reconstruct connecting ramps for disabled parking spaces. Similar interventions are scheduled for Via dei Granai di Nerva in the Roma 70 quadrant, where steel bollards will be installed to deter illegal parking, alongside the creation of new tactile pathways and accessible ramps.
Project Timeline and Potential Adjustments
The project schedule anticipates the completion of works in Piazza Lotto by the first ten days of March. Construction on Piazza Lante will begin immediately thereafter, followed by Via dei Granai di Nerva. However, municipal authorities have indicated that timelines may be subject to change due to adverse weather conditions, a contingency factored in during this time of year.
Political Strategy and Community Endorsement
According to Luca Gasperini, the Municipal Councillor for Public Works, the interventions initiated in recent weeks represent a concrete step in a broader strategy. “The administration is proceeding with the recovery of three areas within the territory, with a specific commitment to renewing signage and introducing tactile pathways for visually impaired citizens. This plan reflects the political will to accelerate the removal of architectural barriers, an objective pursued through a dual operational strategy,” explained Gasperini. “On one hand, we are focusing on deep structural interventions through extraordinary maintenance, while on the other, we are utilizing ordinary maintenance to quickly and immediately resolve less complex issues. The ultimate goal is to transform the road network into a truly inclusive space, where freedom of movement is guaranteed to everyone without the hindrance of physical obstacles.”
The Ardeatino-Tor Marancia Resident Committee also commented on this initiative, emphasizing that “these works represent a significant step towards improving mobility and safety for all, particularly for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, people with disabilities, and cyclists. It is important to acknowledge the Municipality’s merit in allocating public resources towards a better quality of life for residents.” Despite this, the Committee has requested additional interventions in other areas of the district, such as Via Sartorio, which they believe require greater attention.
These efforts underscore the commitment of Municipio VIII to creating a more accessible and inclusive urban environment for all its inhabitants.
